Default Valuation question

I'm afraid to ask, but am kicking around selling my car because I only drive it about 100 miles a month. I'd probably sell it if I could get high market for it. What's it worth?

2001
speed yellow
6 speed
10,200 miles
black supple leather
yellow belts
no nav
It also has a bunch of the leather and aluminum packages getting the MSRP up to 119,810.
not a nick, scratch or ding on it

These days - my guess is $38 - 43K range. Prices have dropped dramatically over the past 8 months. "(

FWIW, AutoTrader has a 2001 w/ 9.2k miles that is local to me listed at $52.9k. I would use that, along w/ other comparable samples on AutoTrader, as a starting point; but you should factor how long those cars have been listed.

gobble-

Rennlister's are famous lowballers...you should be in the high $40's - low $50's range..low miles helps, car being yellow hurts

Car being yellow hurts??? I would have thought just the opposite. I paid a bit of a premium because yellow was harder to find.

I'm curious why you think that. 75% of the cars out there are silver or black. Plus, most of the diecasts are yellow and you can get a model that matches your car.

gobble,

I like yellow, had a yellow GT3, but the masses as a whole don't . You said 75% of cars are black and silver, there is a reason for that, they sell. Sales figures don't lie, those are the 2 colors the majority of people like.

notice my avatar to the left..one black, one silver...lol

He asked what is was worth - not what he should list it for - these days I think if you want to sell the car quickly then the numbers are low $40's. Example - six months ago I bought a fully loaded (MSRP $159000) 2005 996 turbo S cab with 25K miles and still under factory warranty for $64K. Just my opinion.

What a car is worth is what somebody would pay for it and it is fairly different for everybody. That is the point of looking at what comparable examples are listed for, but also factoring the length of time they have been on the market. The idea is to find that sweet number where resale value is maximized, yet price is competitive enough to move it.

Personally, I think a reasonable range is 48-50k. Again, it's close to what comparable turbos are listed for nationwide, but lower to factor the listings that haven't generated interest or aren't moving.

In June this year I paid $57.7K for 03 with 9500 miles arctic silver, leather, no nav. Car came from dealer with 2 year, 100K mile CPO warranty and 4 new 18" Conti tires. Original tires past their use by date.

Your car probably won't have CPO warranty so there's that.

SY not a real problem. (I love SY and think the Turbo looks fantastic in SY!) Generally used car buyers more interested in price and condition and not colors and options.

Can't help you with price but one thing you can do to make car more attractive is have various services done, like oil/filter change (unless done recently), brake fluid flush, alignment with 4 new tires, N-rated, Continental or Michelin or Pirelli tires, and maybe even a coolant drain and refill with fresh anti-freeze. Do any of the above unless they've been done recently.

Thus you can show a buyer he's facing no out of pocket expenses for at least a year's worth of driving.

Another possibility is to keep your car and drive it more. These are fine autos and driving them is just letting them do what they've been designed to do. My 02 Boxster with 225K miles runs today as good as it ever did and has been teh best car I've ever owned.

I'm at end of 3500 mile road trip in my Turbo and have put about 7K miles on car since I bought it in June. I'm planning on going down to LV in late Oct. in it and then back to the mid-west for Thanksgiving week. And who knows where else I'll drive the car in the meantime.

Oh, I did the math and the 1st owner of my car paid over $8/mile -- just in depreciation alone -- to drive his $120K Turbo 9400 or so miles it had when he got rid of it.

My advice is fill up the gas tank and drive the thing. Every day.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Where would you guys peg the value of this car today?

I have a friend that came to me unsolicited with a buyer who wants it for $52. What is a good "high" price for a pristine 10,000 mile car in today's market? If this was your car and you didn't necessarily want to sell it, what price would be too good to pass up?

Some things tell me $52 is a good price, maybe a great price. Other things say I might be able to do a bit better.

$52K ?

Accept his offer and cash before he changes his mind. That is a very fair offer today...can't remember seeing an 01 go for 50K in the past year.
