You can get a $12 rebate from Mobil too.

I see Mobil 15W50 labeled as plain old 5W50, and FS X2 5W50. Both indicate they are fully synthetic? Is it just new labeling, or are they different oils? Are both acceptable for use in our 996TTs?

Thanks -

No 15w—50 and 5w-50 are not the same! They are two different products! 15w-50 is easier to get through retailers, 5w-50 is much harder and sometimes have to go online to get it. Napa currently has it for $5.99 qt and then you can get a $10 rebate thru M1.
15w-50 is not on the Porsche approved oil list, 5w-50 is in temps above 40 deg F.

Kevin - thanks for the response. I see I was sloppy in my post and caused confusion. I meant to say "Mobil 1 5W50 vs. Mobil 1 FS X2 5W50" What I typed looked like "Mobil 15W50" as I was missing a space after the 1.

I have noticed that the 15W50 does seem easier to find, and I did also notice that Napa has the 5W50 available, and on sale as you pointed out. I also noticed that the newest batches of the Mobil 1 are now labeled FS X2 5W50. I found a link to an article that mentions the change in the labeling. Bottom line from what I've been able to find, the formula may have changed a bit resulting in the FS (fully synthetic} label, but both products are acceptable.

Thanks again for the response - I appreciate that you were concerned enough about somebody putting the wrong oil in their car that you took time to write.

Cheers -

Looks like a labeling thing, its meets the Porsche A40 spec

From Mobil 1 data sheet:
Mobil 1 FS X2 5W-50 has the following builder approvals:
PORSCHE A40
XMB-Approval 229.3
XMB--Approval 229.1
