very interesting. The piston/cylinder install is still a bit unclear to me. Coming from a standard V8, this is ridiculously complicated. Furthermore, the top of that motor is a ClusterF**K. good lord.

Thanks for the link!

The piston intall is a little diffent, You install the pistons with out the rods in the outer cylinders the center piston is installled on the crank with a clamp on the piston rings. You install the pins in the outer cylinders then press the center cyinder on to the piston. It confusing even in person till you do it a few times.

Does the word 'blasphemy' mean anything?

That motor is perhaps the finest production engine ever to come out of Zuffenhasuen. Look at the history, reliability and the sheer # of vehicles it has been in over its lifetime. Perhaps the last link back to the glory days of road going Porsche cars links to Motorsports.

Since it's a holiday, I will spare you a 'ban' ....

Thanks for the post. It is very similar on the bottom end to the 964 N/A. It would be fun to do, but I'd like to drive one around for many years before needing to do that.

jesus, take it easy fella.

I think the motor is fantastic in its reliability and power output. But you'd have to blind as a bat to think that the top of that motor is not overtly complicated. Surely its the result of the packaging restraints, but I stand by my statement. Furthermore, the installation of the cylinder block assembly is very strange compared to more standard engines.

There is nothing blasphemous about my post. Its a superb engine, but certainly is a bit busy on the top end.

The top of the motor is the result of
1. Water cooling a air cooled motor.
2. Adding emission controls to a non emission motor

One must have experience and confidence, working on any Porsche engine.
Installation of boxster pistons are more V8 like, but not the piston pins.
