Considering a 996 TT

Considering a 996 TT
Hi,
Seems as though the 996 TT is a real bargain right now. Never been a fan of the 996, due to the front-end styling and dash/guages layout. Rode in a friends 996 TT a few years ago & was obviously impressed by the performance. I currently own a 82 SC & 70 911E, both great cars and each different in their own ways. Looking for more of a daily driver, nice but not so nice that I don't drive it, in the low $40K range. Car may see occasional snow & I live on a mile of "gasp" dirt road. I know it's not for the purists, but the view is worth it. My dream Turbo is a 965, but for the price I figure I could get used to a 996 TT.
Anything to be concerned about on a car like this one? What kind of issues are people finding with miles 40-60,000?

LOL, yeah chipseal is no fun. My road is mag-chlorided, so it's almost like smooth pavement. 1st gear crawl & you are fine.
So...what maintenance or repair issues should I be aware of on a 996TT with
mileage 40-60,000 mile?

They are as reliable as the family car...but more expensive to fix when they need service. I daily mine and have snow tires mounted on a second set of rims. I actually like the interior better than the 993 or 997. Get a silver or gray car and the head lights "blend in" a bit. There is a guy on 6speedonline that has over 200,000miles I believe. I think the 996TT is maybe the best GT car Porsche has ever made.

Remember the motor in the 996 is a devivertive of the GT1 motor that won LeMans in 98. I particulary like the interior. Dash layout very user friendly with a clean look and feel. And I have'nt mentioned the power. Good luck.

Reserve not met at $37,500.
Sign of the times & fear of higher mileage x50? Yes, I realize there are high mileage examples out there. I'm probably 6 months out anyway, just watching from the sidelines.

If I could swing owning TWO, I'd buy yours Turbohead... LOVE that car... Clean, low miles, and good price.
For the original poster, I wouldn't be scared away by high miles. Just make sure you get all of the records for the maintenance and get a ppi by a reputable indy.
Couple things to be aware of...
The transmission in this car is NOT, repeat NOT cheap. I think it's only replacable with reman units now. You can find plenty of shops to rebuild them, but know that along with the motor, the trans is derived of the GT1 style gearbox, and first gear is a MACHINED part of the main shaft. It it goes, you're looking at $2K for that part alone.
The motors are $25K or more to replace. So be aware that this sophisticated car comes with a heavy price if you're one of the unfortunate few who suffer a motor failure. They are rare, but as with everything made by man, there is that chance!
I've owned mine for two years now and loved every minute of it. Other than as MAFS replacement, and upgrades for track day fun, I've had zero maintenance issues. They're bullet proof and extremely unique. You won't see them everywhere in traffic and you will get attention, if that's your thing!

Rennlist member 'T2' has over 200K miles on his X50, New England 4 season daily driver (IIRC, still on the original clutch)
IMHO, there simply is no better "daily driver capable supercar" than the 911 Turbo. Nothing else comes close.

right now I have 4 P cars so I have to sell something even though i hate to.
Low miles is bull.... I have owned lots of these cars used .They are usually very well maintained; and if not it is obvious. You don't need a PPI to see it.These like other Porsches before them, they are extremely durable. When you buy into the low miles syndrome ,you overpay and then are afraid to use them because you don't want to lose value! Isn't that silly?

Truer words have never been typed... I bought mine with low miles and paid thru the nose. Glad I got the car I did, with the mods it had, but I paid for them, that's for sure!
