Just the reality of the new Porsche under Dr. W
I don't understand the "overproduced" label. Porsche did sell every 996tt, and often had a waiting list. The demand was great, and the supply matched it.
In contrast, comparatively few 993 series were sold. I do believe they would have built more, if there was greater demand. In its day, it was probably thought to be too expensive relative to its utility.
Even today, I suspect there are more people who want a 996tt than a 993tt. The difference is that for the small subset of people who prefer the 993 series, there are relatively fewer cars available, so a price premium has evolved.
I think the major difference in the buyer pools is that 996tt buyers tend to be more frequently drivers, and the 993 folks are more frequently weekenders.
At the same price, I would take a 996tt over a 993tt any day. I think it is a better and more usable car in every way. Even if you don't like the headlights, I think one would have to admit the 996tt lights work better.
Are there any 200,000 mile 993tt's out there?

Agreed, but the fact still remains, the 996 and 997 were produced (and sold) in much higher numbers, hence the depreciation seen and the opinion/perception that these cars were commodities, rather than hand build vehicles (as the 993 and prior models are sometimes viewed as).

Dr. W's stated goal of 100K vehicles/year (no matter what), does have side effects to the name/marque and value....IMHO.

Kinda agree w AS, they made a ton of 996 cars bc they sold a ton, remember porsche was almost bankrupt in the late 90s, barely sold any cars.
The thing about resale on a 993tt vs a 996tt has a couple of variables, sure there are less 993s, but so is the buyer pool. It's nearly impossible to finance a 11 yr old car regardless of your credit, hence less buyers. I like almost everything about the 993tt over a 996tt, but the 996tt is the better car in every measurable catagory.

paying low would depend on how high your tolerance is for a piece of crap. Ask anyone who sells 911s for a living, and they will tell you that there are not that many good 993tt left, hence the premium for a good one. The supply of good 993na is dwindling too. There may have been a little spike in supply due to the economy, however clean ones will get harder and harder to find.

I guess measurable categories are what make things valuable? Nah, it is beauty and rarity and that certain "I don't know what" that win out in the end over HP and rear seat space.

I vascilated back and forth between the 993 and 996 when I was looking. I love the look of the 993. IMO it's the best looking 911 ever made. At the end of the day it came down to bang for the buck. As someone said, the 996 tt is the supercar bargain of the century right now.

A 7 year old car that is highly modifiable by the average shade tree mechanic and is still one of the best performing cars on the road. Hard to beat that. Mine is still a head turner. Sometimes the attention is annoying.

Build quality is superior. The 996 model marked the beginning of full assembly line construction based on the Japenese model of car production. The 993 being the last year of the air cooled legacy will always hold its value over the more mass production based 996 and later cars.

I had a 993 Cab and loved it. But the idea that it is a better car than a 996 TT is pure nostalgia. The body flexes like a go kart. The valve guide problems are notorious and the build quality was inferior in every way. (not to mention, A/C, steering, axle hop, the list is endless. I loved that car: the styling, the air-cooled sound etc. but to say that the 993 family is a superior to the 996 family is just out of touch with reality. Car values have nothing to do with car quality but with markets and sentimentality. I will own a 993tt "S" one day but it will not be because it is a superior car. It will be because they are a fun turning point in the Porsche evolution. Just my .02 cents worth.

I have never heard that about the build quality either. In fact I have heard the opposite. But the older aircooled cars are like riding in bug the way the interior is layed out. Very old school VW. Especially the ones from the 60 & 70s. You either like it or don't. They drive great though and are quite nimble.

I own a 996TT and I have heard countless complaints about interior rattles and the cheap feel of the interior from other people about them. Mine has 68k on it and doesn't rattle. And it feels alot better than some of the BMWs of the period I have been in. And the 996 isn't a luxury car. But I don't doubt that some 996s do rattle. But to achieve what any of the modern cars achieve with all of the dashes, panels and contours on the interiors will take plastic unfortunately. And plastic flexes and settles over time. And the plastic feel people complain about on the 996 series car is true for any modern cars. It is unfotunately a necessary evil. Luckily the 996TT has the major parts also covered by double stitch leather to offset all that. Give the 997 cars 10 years and see what kind of rattles people will have with them too.
