Default Cost of ownership - 996 vs. 996TT?

Hey guys,

I know that this has probably been discussed a million times before, but I couldn't quite find the threads via search for some reason. Could someone kindly point me to some threads where this has been hashed out previously?

TIA!

If you look at my sig you will find a link to my 996TT with the history of the stuff I have had to fix during the last two years of ownership.

All in all, pretty bullet proof cars.

As to compared to a 996... oil changes should be the same cost wise, tires are going to be a bit more due to their size, brake pads and rotors a couple of $$ more, etc.

Because it is a more complex car IF something goes wrong it will be more expensive to fix... but so far, the experience I have had has been positive, and reading the forum, I think it has been the same for most of the folks here.

Thanks Jaime, I'm reading that thread now...

Your car looks amazing by the way.

if you properly maintain these cars and do not abuse them, they should last a long time and are real dependable. i did not hesitate going from the 996 to the tt and i am glad i did.

cost of ownership...good question...in comparison to a 996....all I can say is thank goodness for the 4 year warranty (I bought it new). Nothing wrong with the engine, but lots of problems with the rest. No RMS, but its the damned little things that are probably the same as the 996.

That's what is making me nervous as I'll be buying an '01 or '02 which is obviously well outside of the warranty period. Reading Jaime's thread was a real eye opener, lots of small things went wrong (that were fortunately covered under his CPO warranty) that probably would have cost a fortune otherwise.

On a side note, spotted an '04 Guards Red/cashmere cab this morning. WOW!

No, as a matter of fact I turned in to the restaurant where he was headed and had a quick chat with him. It wasn't for sale, but man was it gorgeous!

Agree, Just no point in the purchase of a NA 996, and if you went that route, you would have to worry about the dreaded RMS,, and worse. I would be willing to bet, that if properly maintained and driven,, the tt should far outlast the NA motor. And lets not forget the most important thing,, Smiles per Miles,,

I had a 99 C2 till it caught fire (not a common occurrence) and used the insurance money from the unfortunate event to jump up into a TT.... and aside from the self inflicted costs of buying mods, I have to say that I'm more content with the TT. I know there are folks who will roll their eyes and say ...Oh God here we go again with knocking the 99 996....but the documented failures in the 99's 3.4L engine had me on edge all the time. I was constantly waiting for RMS, intermix, or intermediate shaft failure....so although I really liked the car, the ownership experience was less satisfactory due to anxiety over the potential for known failures. Insofar as costs go, I spent less on the 99 than I have on the TT for fix-its....but only becasue the fix-its are more expensive, not that they occur more often. I was surprised to read how much money in fix-its Statsman has had over the course of his ownership.... because I've encountered just normal wear items like rear struts, blown radiator hose, brakes, front spoiler damage etc. The confidence factor and outstanding performance of the TT far exceeds that of the 99...although I have to say that I really enjoyed the 99 996. Would I ever go back? No...once you've tasted the power and performance of a TT, there's no going back. If you're seriously considering a 996C2....don't drive a turbo. It's like meth...one taste and you can be hooked.

Well I will be purchasing a TT in the near future (soon as I find it) but my 99 996 has only required coil packs & the typical coolant reservoir to keep it going for the 35,000 or so miles I've put on it.....not counting the normal wear items like tires, plugs, brakes & rotors, oil, etc.....

It now has 88,000 & going strong.....
