A polygraph test....
Addendum*** you can see I came back in for an edit to my post....I want to make sure that you don't interpret this as an accusation...I don't know what test would be "conclusive", and your integrity is not an issue. I simply hold to the tried and true records and history of the performance of these cars....they just simply use oil....and the norm is one quart every 1000-2500 miles....some fall below that. I guess there could be exceptions that exceed that figure....but these engines just plain and simply eat a bit of oil...fact, not fiction.

These engines of late have a tendency to use either little to no oil or to use a lot. There was a poll taken over on the 997 forum about a year ago and it showed this fact. It's fairly lame for Porsche to claim that 588 miles to a quart is considered acceptable. Make sure it is fully documented and then simply take it to an arbitrator for their process. If Porsche knew why a small percentage of their engines was doing this they would already fix them. They have no idea. It has absolutely nothing to do with the driver, either, or the break in of the engine. I have known several 996, 986 and 997 owners who have had real oil users and then gotten another car and used little to no oil,--and they didn't suddenly change their driving habits or the driving environment.

Update - It's been about 1,000 miles since I first started monitoring my oil consumption and the meter has finally moved one bar. So the meter does work. I figure the mileage at the next meter drop will be telling since most of the first 1000 miles was my road-trip which may have skewed the usage.

PS. Had my first "wanna race" incident last night from some kids in a G37 who cut across several lanes of traffic to follow me as I made a right turn. That probably used up some oil.

I'm the original owner of my 02ttX50, and kept track of all oil usage from day one up to about 35,000 miles. I now have 51,000 miles. With the break-in technique described multiple times before, my consumption progressively improved from one quart every 1500 miles to one quart every 5,000 miles. I very rarely see the cloud of white smoke on start up, and have never let the car idle for cool down. That is for street driving, as I don't often track the car.
My guess is that some of the variability is due to break-in technique. I do think you need to repeatedly run it up in the rev range, and slow down in-gear to let vacuum suck the rings against the walls during break-in. At some point, it becomes too late. AS

Wow, 4 pages and nary a mention of the oil or it's viscosity? Porsche handbook shows that 20w/50 is recommended down to -10 below freezing. I bet if you increase the W of your oil, the usage will decrease....

I'm getting close to 50K miles and mine never needs oil between changes. I thought I had issues with the metering system but the issues were of my own making. I've put 20K on the car this year but it's not quite a DD. I use 0-40 oil and I try to change at 3K but never go more than 5K between changes. My driving is mostly highway and I don't get to push it as hard as I would like to. Even after two days at CMP with 7 or 8 half hour sessions, no change in oil level.
