Uh..dock you mean your oil consumption is greatest when you drive small trips...agree with this.

You're right...thanks for catching that. I was typing too fast (and without good concentration on what I was writing).

Since I started the oil consumption test after brand new oil change at the dealer it has been extremely consistent with one bar gone ~120 miles or so.
The dealer is stupid or is avoiding the issue: If you add a quart when it is at one bar, then drive 400 miles, then add a quart when it hits one bar again IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE LEVEL GOES UP TO WHEN YOU ADD ONE QUART!

First you need to get the dealer to agree the oil use is escessive, THEN you can look for a reason. Rings and cylinder are an obvious area. Not something for casual diagnosis.

Why not keep you oil FULL, and just track how much oil is added to keep it at full... then no need to guess/argue about how much oil is each 'line'.

Adam - Fully agree with your logic - I think that it is definitely the latter (dealer is avoiding the issue). IF he wants to pull a stupid argument, I think that the idea of "getting it full" could work but seems to me that "1qt until it runs out" is the most accurate measure. I will likely finish my current quart by end of next week so will visit the dealer then. I will keep you posted. By the way, I am surprised you are the first one to throw in an hypothesis (rings and cylinder). When I first mentioned it to the dealer he mentioned maybe "valve guides" but quite honestly I dont know the degree of difficulty/cost between all of these...

It could be the oil level gauge. If its only going up four lines with a full quart you could be filling it past full, and blowing the oil out of the engine, and then starting the cycle over. When I get a check oil level consumption warning, I usually add about a half quart and it brings it up to the half way mark on the engine. Wish you luck. If it is a engine problem, I wish you the best of luck getting it replaced.

Wow, 500 to 600 miles per quart seems ridiculously low.

I have put over 5,000 miles on mine and still waiting to add my first quart! It is getting close though (one bar to the add indicator) but I was told also to wait until is was one bar UNDER the add oil mark from the dealer. I hear overfilling is really bad for th TTs.

5,000 miles between quarts may be a world record. That, or your oil measurement system is not working correctly.

If you let the car idle for a minute or two does and white smoke appear. This could be turbo bearings!

Right....I'm sure it's the oil sensor showing the oil is too low....there they go again dragging red herrings over the issues. Each bar on the oil level gauge is supposed to measure .26 of a quart...so for the sake of simplicity lets just say it a 1/4 quart per bar.

What's that got to do with the fact it's using an ungodly amount of oil....beats the hell out of me....but if you're down 1 bar ever 120 miles and you do the math, that's a quart every 480 miles....which is well above what they supposedly call "normal consumption rate" of up to one quart every 600 miles. If I had a car that ate a quart every 600 miles (unless I was tracking it) I'd be banging on their door too. I would be upset if it ate a quart every 600 miles.....I wonder how Porsche set the "acceptable consumption rate" at 600 miles? Must've been on the track huh?

I just finished a 750 mile trip between San Fran and Phoenix and my oil consumption gauge showed no change.

I imagine Porsche must test the car under some extreme circumstances (track, heat, etc) and the see what a normal engine would do and then determine the "maximum allowable oil consumption" Someone at the 6speed forum just suggested that since the "max normal" rate is 600 that I should just add oil as needed and call it a day but that's why it is called the "MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE!" Otherwise, where do you draw the line, 400, 300?

By the way, I bought this book called 996 essential companion which lists ALL the technical specs of all 996 cars and for the turbo engine M96/70 it lists the 600 miles as the max. allowable oil consumption rate...

Thanks for wishing me luck - it is my first Porsche and I love the car otherwise.

Let us know if you go 5,000 miles between quarts.

Maybe ait109 or 911TTCABi are the ones that actually need a new oil sensor....

.
Well at least we know it wasn't written by Porsche as the factory books are all in metric:
"Oil consumption........ Max. 1.0l/1000km"
