Default Plastic air flow regulator Pre MAF

any thoughts as to whether this air flow regulator in the 996 OEM airbox makes any difference performance wise in or out, obviously one stills needs the wire mesh grill behind it though ?

Where exactly is that located in relation to the MAF?

The reason I ask is that we have tested HVAC plenum fans that benefit a great deal from having an inlet airflow straightener, especially when the airflow to the inlet is coming from a right angle. I could imagine that grid doing something similar to the airflow pattern as it moves across the MAF.

If you remove it you will eat MAF's.. It is a parabolic diffuser engineered to straighten the air. If you look at the factory inlet you will see the various different elevation changes in the velocity tube entering the diffuser. Porsche spent some time engineering this hardware. Keep it installed.

Why would you remove it??

Well I have have mine out for a year now and no new MAF's, I put it back it today and it seems to restrict max boost by 0.1 from what I can tell as couldn't get the Porker beyond 1.2 Bar today

I believe the question of the utility of the diffuser depends on the type of car (only turbos) and mods (for example if you have a modified airbox). It is a suspect if you have higher hp car.

As far as losing boost...are you sure? What test did you do to verify this?

With your mods, 1.2 is what you should be hitting max. Hopefully you are running race gas as well. If you are running greater than 1.2....good luck.
