Default Experience with Turbo-Performance in Van Nuys CA?

Hi guys,
I have been perusing TT mod posts with interest in an attempt to educate my self to choose the most appropriate performance upgrades and provider.
While Vidid, UMW, etc are all excellent options I would prefer to keep my business local (Los Angeles) and to build long term relationship with an experienced shop.
To this end I am considering Turbo Performance in Van Nuys California for a set of their K-16/24 turbos. Bob had been generous with his time on the phone and no doubt there experience with our cars is extensive. I would like to here from any of you that have first hand experience with their turbos, headers, inter-coolers & support?
Also, in regards to what to upgrade: I am currently running a non X-50 with mild ECU re-program (previous owner), Fab Speed exhaust and plenum intake. Daily driver only (no tracking) Things a feeling a tad sluggish and i would like to achieve around 650FWH with out getting into internals. To this end are the K-16/24 up to this task with an aggressive tune? Are new headers and inter-coolers necessary at this stage or are they items one could upgrade to gradually for a few extra horse at a later date? Would it be prudent to replace factory DV and waste gates or are they up to the task? Is a 5b fpr nec?
Finally the actual "tuner" will play a large role in eking out HP gains. Turbo Performance sends ECU's "to a guy" in Sacramento? A bit mysterious for my liking..........is it practical to have them do the actual hardware upgrades and send my ECU elsewhere? It's important that my new tune can be modified in the future with out big $$$$ each time.

All thoughts most appreciated.

Cheers,

J

2 things come to mind...you need hardware, and you need someone to install. My guess is "Turbo Performance does not make the turbos, but buys them from someone. What I did was found a local knowledgeable indy, discussed my plans with them. I bought the hardware and had him install it. I bought the hardware from the the same source as the tune (ECU) so the tune matches my hardware. Good luck.

Good points Statman...thank you.
Turbo-Performance designs, machines, fabricates all there TT add on components as well as doing the install. This is the appeal to me. This is like going straight to the horses mouth in regards to hardware however they do not tune. In fact I suspect that a lot of you are running Turbo-Performance products with out knowing out since they supply many resellers who market their products under different names.

Cheers,

J

Go talk w/Dan or Sam at Speed Gallery in Studio City....818-766-2321. You'll get a good ear full! Plus you can drop buy and they are always modding someone's turbo and they've got lots of cool turbo parts to check out. Good field trip....and its local.

Thank you for your suggestion LA964RS. When you get the chance please comment on the cost of a set of K16/24 @ http://turbo-performance.com/index.htm verses Speed Gallery. I am a believer in you get what you pay for however the difference is drastic.

Cheers,

J

I bought all my stuff from Kevin. Don't know the turbo-perf guys. Just know Dan and those guys as they've worked on my car and have a good track record of getting guys what they want. Speed cost $$....you know the rest.

So none of you have dealt with Turbo-Performance directly?

It was strongly suggested by my (Porsche specialty) shop that I use another rebuilder. Hence I have no direct experience.

none of those guys actually DO the rebuilds. they send them out. that said, my 16/24's from speed gallery are still strong. though i had a scare thinking one had blown. not so. mine have been installed for well over a decade.

Who does rebuilds in SoCal?

I don't see the point to send heavy turbos across the country and wait two weeks just because of shipping.

A rebuild should be done within a day.

call the locals as noted in this thread. they've been rebuilding and "hybridizing" them for nearly 15 years. they usually have them in stock, and you pay less when you have usable cores. like - 500. if not they send them out for a week.

16/24's are awesome. still. its not as if the 996 turbo iteration got "better' either.
