Ticking in the engine...Is this normal
Being new to the Turbo club, I want to make sure this is a normal sound. I hear a faint ticking noise after I get done driving the car. I have checked the oil-within norms. It sounds like the cam to me. I just want to make sure everything is ok. Also, I get ticking from the engine as soon I turn the car from heat expansion / contraction. It's fairly loud and starts immediately after I turn the motor off.

The clicking when you turn it off is normal expansion / reduction due to heat. All cars do it.
I've been told the rattle noise at idle is also normal... all 996 Turbos do it to some degree. My mechanic says it's the countershaft. When the engine is cold or if you put thicker oil in the engine the noise is reduced. However, don't put thicker oil in as the thinner the better for oil flow when the engine is cold.
Mine has this noise and I was concerned so I had the Porsche dealer confirm it was normal during the pre purchase inspection.

I get the intermediate shaft clacking like everyone else, but my car also has a ticking sound that increases and decreases with revs. When I'm driving with the windows down next to a wall or guard rail at < 40mph, I can hear it... tick tick tick tick.
Last time I heard ticking like this from a motor was an E36 M3 with bent valves (although that was much louder).
It's been doing it for as long as I've owned the car and I've put 40k miles on it, so I'm guessing its ok? If it was something serious like valvetrain issues, would it throw a CEL?

Its funny, we are so used to driving cars that are dead quiet that any little noise in the 996TT must be something going wrong...
I must have taken my car to the dealer so many times for noises that are normal...
But, as they say, better safe than sorry...
