I have been deciding for a while now what car would be best for me. I narrowed it down to porsche after being stuck on the Elise/Exige for a while but I decided I want some more refined and civil in my only car. My order of importance in terms of what I want with the car is

1. Handling
2. Looks
3. Comfort
4. Power

So do you think I should go for an 05 997 base or an 01-02 996 TT? Im guessing the 997 is the better handling car stock, if this is right how much $ would it take to make the TT handle as well as the 997? Thanks for your help.

I was looking at the 997TT but ended up buying a 996TT due to the following reasons. Cost, and both are very similar cars except for the way they look outside and inside. But i think chassis, suspension, and motor are the same on both 996 and 997.

if handling is the issue go for the 997...
It is not the fact that it handles better...but it is also more to to take it to its limits( or to be precise your limits...)

it all comes to down to how $$$ you need to get each car as well as how much you will loose on depreciation...

p.s. if you are planning on spending money on suspension then spend it on the 997 and it will handle better than 996 GT3....(or pretty close)

Model year 2001. 2002 it got a glove box and didn't change much at all from there except more options ie.X50 (or is it X51).

Second year of full production, means the updated vendor parts being installed down the assembly line. Such as the new intercooler charge air hoses, newer updated water hose orings>>minor tweaks.. I am not saying that "any" '01 is a lessor car, but as always try to purchase the newer model year. I'd also buy a newer model year over a older year with up to 10K More miles.

Just remember for $50K you will most likely get a stock (non X50) 996TT without warranty. In order for it to be any good, most owners will have to add hybrid turbos, flash, exhaust ,intakes, suspension and GT3 seats. Plus a major service. This may easily be an additional $20K....Don't forget exterior mods and brakes upgrades.That said, the best bang for your bucks is to buy an already modded 996TT with good history.

Stock is fine. Many feel compelled to modify the car, which enhances power with some risk of loss of longevity, and occasionally "check engine light" warnings. It is easy to get more power, if you feel so inclined. The flash is relatively inexpensive, and most don't do the hybred turbos, GT3 seats, etc. You can probably get a car that has had it's service- otherwise figure about 2 grand for the 30,000, or 60,000 interval.
