I'm very conservative. I don't mod heavily, and I drive in a spirited manner but have never tracked....but I do think that I'd enjoy learning to drift....it's just something that looks like the ultimate in being able to control your car in certain cornering conditions....maybe it's hard on the car, certainly on the tires....but to me it looks like it could be fun.

Here is what I mean, and sorry if it wasn't clear:
When the speed or braking causes the tail to rotate, and you have opposite lock and throttle on thru the corner, the car is lightly drifting. It isn't every corner, but it certainly occurs every lap. Some cars that understeer primarily require the technique (eg the typical mustang), some that oversteer just do that all the time (Typical Lotus Super 7), some (Like the Elise 190R) just have it happen for a moment in the corner, but it isn't held. If you look at the video of the Can Am cars that was posted on a recent link, you will see it often. In those cars it was easier than it looks, because there are so many ways to ease into it.
The 30 degree smoking sideways drifts of the GT2 video are definitely the slow way around, and occur in racing only thru error. Are we in the same page?

2 cents here for what it's worth.....I think it's at least worth a laugh & kinda fun to watch, especially when the cars are all fitted with big wings and aerokits (to go 50mph).
Sure it requires ability and experience and now is part of motorsports (as is the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
).
Up here in Wisconsin (where we've had 3 or 4 significant snows already)......I'll come clean & admit it's a hoot driving in this stuff.......yes I drift.
Aside from fun, it provides some off-season practice for summer autocross.

An older clip but always fun to watch, particularly the very end.
