What is the deal with 996TT being cheaper than 993TT?

+1. One more point, On top of 996TT interior being more modern than the 993TT, I actually also prefer the 996TT interior to 997TT - don't ask me why – more curves I suppose – this retro - going back to go forward really is the weirdest design concept Porsche could come up with. And the stop watch option on the dash is just abysmal...
...but the one thing I would never give up; is the view of my rear spoiler coming up so I can see it - gone in a 997TT. :-)

I hated the 996 when it came out. In my mind the 993 was always the last real Porsche built. I remember touring the factory in 1999 thinking Porsche was making a huge mistake with the 996. I've always wanted a 993tt and didn't like the 996tt the first time I saw it.
All that being said, when I decided this summer that I could afford a turbo I decided I would be a fool to buy a 10 year old 993tt when the 996tt was clearly a better and more modern car.

I have always found it amazing the way a new style or design will come out, and I will not like it. Then as years pass it will grow on you. I always felt less than excited about the 996 and Boxster design as far as the way they looked. I especially did not like the fried egg headlights. Now as years have passed, I was actually admiring the headlights on my tt. Sitting next to my older 911's I now like the look better, maybe it is just the more modern appearance. It will be interesting to see if Porsche continues down the path of the retro look in the next few years. The 993 is still a great looking car, always will be. But if I am going to leave town and really get out on the road and far from home, I want to be in the most modern Porsche I can afford. For right now, that is a 996tt.
I feel more comfortable driving fast in this car than any previous P car I have owned. I always said that in the older cars, you can almost taste the pavement, due to the feedback through the wheels, the steering and the whole car. However, on a long road trip, this does tend to wear you down. The modern cars are just so much more advanced, that to me, I will always pick the newer car over the older version for a long drive.

Although I have a 996 Turbo myself, and the 996 is much faster and more refined. The 993TT is still my dream car. It's one of the sexiest cars EVER built. If you want big power, the 996TT is the best bang for the buck..

I think the reason 993tt are more desirable is ONLY beacuse it IS the last air cooled turbo Porsche built. As we know Porsches air cooled engines ARE a true blood Porsche. They have been for over 40 years until water cooled engines came around. This makes them a collector item.

Before buying my 03 996tt my first choice always was the 993tt because of that reason. They are in a sort of way "The Last of the Mohicans". But since I'm not a colletors guy and I like technology I choose the 996tt instead.

looking for a Rangerover for my GF, the dealer had a 2002 996 tt for $34,000, un f...ing believable, and they are making money selling at that price so just wonder how much they got it for. It had 74000 miles but still.....

In my opinion, 8,000 996 Turbo coupe sales in the US is not exactly high volume. Of the 8,000, I figure that a 1000 or so are wrecked or are in poor condition. The 993TT adds up to about 2,000 units - fewer, so higher value. But, for significant appreciation in value over time, I think you'd need a model to have US sales in the 300-400 range, maybe less.
I'm guessing that if the cars were switched around i.e. 996TT body was the last of the air cooled turbos with a lower production number, regardless of headlights or other design factors, it would garner more favor.
Another view - outside of the world of car enthusiasts (ie. the majority of the population) if you show someone a picture of both cars (interior and exterior), I suspect that most would favor the 996TT. In our world we know the 993TT is rarer so we have a different view.
Ok, off the soap box now! I like all the turbos from 91 onwards. I personally would not care to own a pre 91 turbo regardless of value - although I had to drive one before I could make the call.

i'm with you, i LOVE all turbo's whether 964's, 993's, 996's and yes 997's. however, with a limited budget, i will always buy the newest car i can afford, just because of dependability.
