What is the deal with 996TT being cheaper than 993TT?

Well, just parked next to 993TT yesterday. I will only say this (and probably get flamed anyways by some people) because I am on 996TT board. But although I loved the 993TT and was my dream car for a long, long time, I think 996TT looks much better and far more modern. The 993TT looked positively dated next to my car and I am really glad I went for 996TT. As far as driving, all this talk about numb steering wheel and hand built crap is bollocks. I test drove both to no end before making my decision. My opinion is that every new incarnation of a 911 is better than the previous one. But I think I know whazzup with this old icons verus new cars; I’ve had a tuned 944TS before and was talking it up against the 911’s and telling everyone how it’s better balanced, hand built, best Porsche ever and how it was meant to replace the 911 by Ferdinand himself and so on and how modern cars are crap as they are build by Jap technology robots and so on. All I can say is; was talking a lot of CRAP. Enough said? :-)

According to PCNA, the total North American 996 Turbo sales from 6/00 to 8/05 was 9,969 of which 2,045 were Cabs.
The total North American 993 Turbo sales from 4/95 to 10/97 was 2,062.

In my dreams I'd have one of each. Both my favorites for sure.
Actually I'd have 1 911 from every period in my dreams.
I ended up with the 996tt as I felt it was the best of all worlds.![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

The 993TT is a great car, no doubt. The maintenance cost is what's gonna kill you, that's where the ultra-reliable 996TT has a clear advantage. As far as which one would be a better DD, clearly the 6 wins again. Purity/looks/class it's the 3 all the way!

My 996TT on the other hand, just came back from its $1500 30k service, needed its transmission replaced (big $$ I'm sure, but covered under warranty), has been in twice for rear spoliers issues, the first of which required a $1400 repair. Oh yeah, then there is the door speaker that rattled loose, the cheesy console lid (yes I've since installed the retrofit hinge), the clutch switch issue that prevented it from starting intermittently, the $400+ for a spare key, etc. All small issues in a 6-7 year old car but they are there just the same. I love my TT and so far it has been a great daily driver. Snow tires are going on today in fact. As a "supercar" it is unbelievably practical. Not Honda quality, but maybe more like Subaru.
And not to intentionally offend anyone, but if you can't tell the difference in build quality between a 993 and a 996 you must not be particularly mechanically inclined. I'm talking about the robustness of the design and the materials used, not whether or not the 996 was assembled as intended (per spec) for any of you QC engineers out there. The 996 "works" fine in normal use, but it is built much cheaper than the previous generations. There is a reason Porsche has been immensely profitable since the early 2000s, and it is not all the Cayenne. High sales price minus low input costs equals high profit.

Well the 993tt and the 996tt engines are a bit different, esp with reference to the valve guides. A lot of 993tts' have had top end rebuilds by 50k, that ain't cheap. The suspension usually is also gone by 50k, turbo rebuilds, etc...... these are just a couple of items that were improved from the 3 to 6 generation. Top end rebuilds and SAI issues are almost unheard of in 996tts'. FWIW, my friends '97 993tt (55k miles) had the SAI job at the dealer, 8500$. So I guess the turbo might run more than a NA car there.
I think the 3 is built better, but the 6 was engineered better, bottom line.
I put 64k miles on my 996c4s, never replaced a damn thing, car was/is rock solid. Not sure a comparable 993c4s would go 64k miles and need nothing outside of routine maintenance, jmo, and I am mechanically inclined thank you.![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I'd rather have a 993tt as a weekend car, while the 996(7)tt would be my choice of DD.

Agree 110%. I love my 996TT as a DD, and once I've racked up enough miles on it over the next few years, I hope to replace it with a 997TT.
