Default 996TT Eninge nose- need your opinion

Have an 01' 996TT with 38mls and when the engine is cold at idle it has a radling noise on the lower side of the motor, almost sounds like a slopy timing chain. If you give it a little idle at 1100rpm it is gone.
Once warmed up it is almost gone but you can still hear it a little.
Oil is fresh and the right stuff.

Does anybody have the same problem or any experience what this may be?

Yes, engine noise. A heavy ticking that sounds like a timing chain or something like it.

Service? Just got the car and had the oil changed. No flywheel since it is tiptronic.

Guess the trip to the local dealer will be next.

Probably normal "bucket of bolts" sound that is common on our engines.
Have an expert listen to it to be sure.

normal noise casued by the intermediate shaft walking against the housing porsche states its normal do not attempt to repair , no long term effects ive never seen or heard of it to casue a problem. Really ever see turbos with engines problems at all.
Its normal and the dealer should tell you the same thing

ltc and 99Firehawk were correct. The rackett that you hear is the intermediate shaft. Picture this.. The crankshaft has a gear on it that turns another shaft. This shaft is called the intermediate shaft. The duty for this shaft is to turn your 2 stage dry sump oil pump AND your turbocharger oil return sump pump, and also turn both left and right camshaft banks. With all the gear lash and drive noise at idle it can definitely make some noise..

My 2001 Turbo makes the same noise. Seems to smooth out once it warms up.

Primarily caused by the backlash between the straight cut gears on the crank / Int. Shaft. You will see in the PET that porsche has 2 or 3 different gear sets with slightly different center distances in an attempt to mitigate things on later engines. And I do think the late '02 and beyond engines are, as a whole....a little better on this noise. The earliest versions had just one gear set part number. This whole thing and the single p/n on the gear set carry over from the 993......which made noise but was hidden by the air / fan noise. When Porsche water cooled the engine for the 996 TT......the noise became apparent. 99firehawk and otheres here are correct in their views about deal reactions etc.

I can't believe it nowI have another noise. Just at 2000-2200rpm, when you give it just enough gas that it does now downshift in lower gear ( automatic car), I get a whining noise, sound just like when a bearing starts to seize up. Sound like it is coming from under the dash. It only does it when you have a heavy load on it at this rpm.

I have an 01 and an 05. Both make the same racket. The 05 has been to the dealer with that specific question. The response was that it was normal.
