Pete,
You trade the car in to a dealer and they give you a certain amount of money for it, that pays your lease off +/-.
A second option and less preferrable on is to turn the car back in.

Seperate options, don't confuse the two.

My 996tt has become my daily driver I like it so much. no problems through a couple thousand miles.

p.s. bank residuals were never terribly high on a 996tt so leasing is likely still more expensive than buying outright, even with the increase in depreciation we've seen lately.

I'll say buying the 996tt was one of the best investment I've made in the last few months

Great car! 8,700 problem free miles. I have not been to the dealer since the day I took delivery in June.

Lease? What are you talking about? I paid cash for the car.

I doubt you could get a baby seat in the back of a TT. Take it with you on your next test drive. I never tried to drive one in the snow, but my guess is it would be awful. The front spoiler is very low. Low enough to scrape driveway entrances unless you go slow.

I have a Aug '00 996 Turbo. It's a daily-driver (dry, wet, snow, whatever), and we spent 16 days at various tracks this year only. It now has 87'000 km, and the only issues up to now were following:
- intermittent (rare) fuel gauge problem: being fixed right now
- rear-wing refusing to come down automatically: having been fixed already. This was a known problem on early-production cars.

My car is not under warranty anymore, but both issues have been fixed free of charge anyway. This is what I call customer-service!

As you can see, the Turbo seems to be impressively reliable. Even my dealer is impressed!... (My car must be one of the few 996 TT that will reach 100'000 km pretty soon.)

Gilly,

Any Porsche should be a wonder of reliability and solidity compared to the F 348.

Gilly,

I have owned many Porsches from 944 Turbos, 930 Turbos, 935 IMSA racecars, 996 TT and they have ALL been fantastic. Most of the cars have been new so I knew how they were maintained properly.

Zero repairs on the 01 996 TT (8K miles and has been to the track) and very few repairs on the others.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2001 996TT and only have had one of the driver door panels replaced because the leather puffed off of it. I have 15000 miles on it and has spent about 8 days on the track not to mention some moderately aggressive driving off the track. It has been much more reliable than all the benzes I have had.

But lets face it, if you want true reliability buy Japanese such as Lexus, Acura, or Infiniti. My family and I have owned a bunch of those in the past and they never break. The problem is that they don't currently amke anything that competes with Porsche or Ferrari, so you are stuck for now. When the new NSX comes out or the rumored super-Lexus then I will certainly look at them as that I am not a German car snob. When you start making cars with the kind of power the 996TT generates and take it to the track I doubt they will be any more reliable under the stresses that I subject my car to.

Hey thanks for the responses. I'm breathing alot easier now. I'll find out today whether that baby seat is going to fit in the back after one more test drive. It just might work, my wife is pretty petite so I figure I can scoot the passenger seat forward. The 996tt I'm looking at is a 2001 model but from what I've heard on this board, it may be better to just go with an '02. The prices are great on an '01 though. I'll just make sure the PPI gives it a thumbs up.

Being able to drive in the snow is just a way to get my wife to agree to the car. I have a 4x4 sport ute to drive in inclement weather so I'll be trading in my 348 as well as a 3 series bimmer for the tt. We carpool so we only use the sport ute, so the pitch about driving in snow was just to satisfy my wifes need for a backup car that we can use just in case.

I'm doing it right this time, when I bought my F-car, it just miraculously showed up in our garage. Needless to say, she didn't talk to me for a week. Plus she always called my 348 a 'Fiero'. At least she likes Porsches!

Thanks for all the inputs!

I have owned 6 porsches, with one on the way; a 944, boxster, boxsterS two 996 cabs, and a C4S. TT is on order now, due in around Christmas..HoHoHo!!! I have never had any problems with any of my Pcars, with the excpetion of my 1985 944, which only had a minor oil leak. I would highly recommend you get a new TT 03, or low mileage 02..well worth the money. Porsche cars are so much better now than they were in 80s, IMHO. Good luck!!!!

My advice is pretty straightforward:

Buy that last year of a series. For example the 1998 (I think was the last year) of the 993 Turbo S. Or the 2004 (or whenever the last year is) of the 996 TT.

Check out www.alldata.com and see all the issues the car has and how in the later models these issues are getting solved.

A good example would be to buy a 1995 E34 BMW M5 for example. A masterpiece of technology. Hand assembled. For connoseurs only. ;-)

Best,
TurboRod
