Post 1st impressions- Michelin Pilot Sport Cups

I've gone through 2 sets of P-Zero Assymetricos in 15K miles, and haven't been thrilled with them. They seemed only a step above ContiSport Contacts. IMHO good for highway gobblers, but for thrashers/trackers not enough grip. For comparison, over the past few years have had regular Michelin Pilots, first gen Contisport Contacts, and Yokohama AVS Sport.

My impressions? WOW! These tires grip as much better than the Yokos than the Yokos grip in comparison to the Contis. I've never had a set of tires make this much difference in grip on acceleration, cornering or braking. I know I may be overreacting, but these tires seem to have transformed the car. The sidewalls seem perceptively stiffer (though I do not know if this is true), ABS doesn't kick in as easily, and on some farm roads after a 30 mile break in, corners where I usually drift a little were stuck like on rails.

Almost definitely not a long life or good wet weather tire, but for those of you looking for more grip, these are a great option.

hey chad-
for now, stock sizes. I wasn't at the track, and wasn't monitoring tire temp. Need to get your setup someday. Just warmed up the tires seat of the pants, ambient temp was about 80, nice dry day.

try the Dunlop SP Super Sport Race and you will see the difference. it is about 2 sec faster than the Mich cup at the Formula one track at hockenheim.

Konstantin
PS it is not the perfect tire for wet. But It is the best for dry. Maybe the new Bridgestone RE55S will be better but til now the Dunlop is the best.

So one of the pics isn't of the tire Konstantin mentioned...

put the url in <a href="http://babel.altavista.com/tr" target="_blank">http://babel.altavista.com/tr</a> for a trannslation
ye sit is a full street aproved tire (at least in Geramny)
Dunlop offers it only to sprt drivers (who have a racing pilot licence)

Hi Konstantin
How do you know and are you sure that the DUNLOPS are faster tires than the Michelin Sport CUPs. Do you know where there is any side by side data collected under the same condions?
thanks for the post

hello
It was a test made an Hockenheim F1 race track by one of the famoust Geramn magazins. they tested 5 tires. At the end the Dunlop super sport race was the fastest and it wa sbanned from the Tuner GP ( A drift and tuner challenge organized by teh same magazin) Many tuners show up with their cars (tech art gemballa RS tunning etc and test their car at the TRACK.
I do not have the test here any more otherwise I could scan it and sent you a copy. I remebere the dunlop 9090 was also much slower than the SSport Race the Michelin cup (i wa s also surprised) and some other "sport" tires like yoko and bridgestone
The magazin called Sport Auto.
I think Gemablla or Tech art made the last record at Nurburgring using this tire.

I thought the Gemballa was on Yokos at the Ring when they claimed the record, or atleast that's what I read somewhere. Not sure about the Techart record at the ring and which tires they used.

Do you mean <a href="http://www.porsche964.nl/misc/tyretest.php" target="_blank">this test</a> by any chance?

Cheers,

JW,
Thanks for the post. It does seem that Michelin Cup was the fastest tire in the group while Dunlop SSR was the slowest of the bunch. I am not sure how this correlates with what Konstantin has posted.

Looks like the Michelin Sport CUP posted the fastest overall time. 1:17 . Someone should have sent them the HOOSIERS!

no this is not the same test a sthe one I am talking about wa salso included some street tires and even the Dunlop 9090.
Maybe I mixed teh magazin with another one. I am really not sure. Interesting that the results on this one is total different. Either Porsche suported michelin (since Michalin is the official Sponsor now and pay to Porsche alot for the suport in the Supercup) or the extrem negativ camber makes the GT3 much faster on the michelin.
Also do not forget that the same brand has not the same compount if it is not build on the same date.
the bridgestone I am talking about is this one
<a href="http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/ms_tyre2/55s-tokutyo.html" target="_blank">http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/ms_tyre2/55s-tokutyo.html</a>

If I found more info on this I will put it here.

Konstantin
