Hollow spoke 996 wheels
#3
Easy tests have all been mentioned.
In general:
Metal valve stems on "all" hollows - but could be on a mono block, but not from the factory.
Hollow have a smooth back of the spoke, inside of the wheel - while mono blocs have grooves cut in to lighten the wheel.
To be 100% sure take a wheel off and the part numbers for Hollows will be:
fronts: 99636213600 or 604 - mono's are 601
rears: 99636214200 or 203 - mono's are 201
The 00's were the early ones, then they switched to 01 to designate monos, then some later cars (post mono's) came with 03's & 04's and some are stamped 00.

Thanks guys! I just bought a set on E-bay, and they were advertised as being hollow spokes. They went for more than those NOT designated as hollow-spoke, so I want to make sure I know how to tell the difference when they come in.

$2750 for a full set of wheels and tires with only 160 miles on them (claimed). Other sets have gone for around $2000, but none I have seen make the "hollow" claim.

for details
There are several other sets on Ebay at a time usually.

btw, I am a Kinesis dealer, and I can't even buy wheels this cheap. I don't really need the extra tires (will use track tires on the wheels), but the price was right imho.

Got my spare wheels/tires today and they look great. The wheels are in perfect condition, and the tire are like brand new, still having the rubber mold "risers" on the tread.
They pass the "smooth" back test for being hollow wheels, so I'm pleased. Haven't checked the #'s yet, but I'm pretty sure I got what I was promissed.
Now if my car would only arrive!

Hi y2khardtop,
The wheels are indeed a good deal. I see that there is another set on eBay at the moment. I gather that these are take-off's.
I also want a second set of rims. I would buy these (which are made by BBS) but the thing that stops me is that aftermarket rims are about 5 lbs lighter on the rear than are the hollow spoke rims. 5 lbs is a lot!
Still, given the cost of replacement rims and the utility of having two complete sets of matching rims, I will probably follow your example.
Best,
S.

one last note. Ijust picked up my car, and the wheels/tires I bought on Ebay have LESS wear on them than the tires on my new car! These tires must have only 20 or 30 miles on them! I am glad I bought them.
