I was speaking to the local Aston dealer yesterday. A guy is trading his sub 1K mile GT2 in on a Vanquish. The highest number P dealers are willing to pay for his car is $150K. He commented, and I agree, I can't remember last time I saw the value of a P-car drop like a rock...

My dealer in So cal has had one on the floor since summer. No bites. Still sitting, tried working a possible trade.

I think when Porsche fits the Carrera GT motor in a 911 body style (or the V8 TT), some of us factory folks may not care about the relatively small differences between a 996 TT or GT2. Personally, that's what I'm waiting for. Here's a quote from Car & Driver magazine:

"...That price ($184,955) might seem high for a car that is essentially a souped-up, decontented 911 Turbo that sells for $118,108, a difference of $66,847. Don't agree? Check the facts. The GT2's engine is the same one found in the Turbo model. The same twin turbochargers pump air into the same 3.6-liter engine, but in the GT2, the engine-management computer allows the turbos to pump in a maximum of 14.5 psi of boost, 2.7 more psi than in the Turbo car..."

They go on to talk about the lowered suspension, metal bushings, adjustable roll bars, ceramic rotors, body work, wing and the missing 4WD contributing to most of the 179-pound weight savings. They also go on to say the acceleration is nearly identical (small track or street) to the stock turbo:

0-60 (3.8 vs 3.9)
1/4-mile (12.0 @ 121 vs 12.3 @ 116)

To me (I primarily care about acceleration, reliability and durability for fun X-country trips, with looks a close second) there doesn't seem to be a BIG difference between the 993TT, 996TT or GT2. That's why I choose to keep my car until something really BIG happens.

P.S. I never use the radio in my Ruf and always drive with the windows and sunroof open!

Also, I like when the casual observer (like my mom) asks "Is that new?" or "Wow!" when they see a new car sitting in the garage. My mom didn't say either when I upgraded my '78 Silver 930 to a Silver '96 993TT. She might say it with a 996TT. But definitely not with a 996TT to a GT2!

You're not pushing 540HP at the rear wheels. Perhaps at the crank.

But you're right, why buy the GT2 when you can tune an AWD for much less. For 190k, I'd rather have a 360 Spider.

Totally agree, this is the tone I meant with my comments above... Saying one car is a bad buy or not worth it is a fool's errand... The only bad buy is when you get the cr you didn't want, instead of the one you did.

Personally, I wish I could have one of every Porsche in my garage, not to mention every Ferrari!

I've seen 959's at Andial with California plates (although I recall one being a dealer plate). 959's have also been for sale at several dealers in Beverly Hills with California plates. If I recall, prices have been around $300K for a mint car. The car makes a visual statement. However, your GT2 will easily outperform it in every respect.

P.S. I don't ever think a car is a bad buy. I buy cars out of passion. I never buy a car to make money. Look at the people who bought the 993 TT S for almost $200K, or a Ferrari F40 for almost a million. Most of these people bought the cars because they were passionate for them at the time. Only the ones that bought them for an investment were disappointed.

Also, I don't think anyone is degrading any car or modification. We just "passionately" want to know how much faster, reliable, comfortable or better looking it is than our car!

Fun thread, only found on Rennlist.

I owned a GT2 for approximate 2000 miles and 3 months. Honestly, I did not buy the car for racing on the track, but I wanted a rather unique Porsche which I could use as a daily driver. A lot of the technology within the car was outside of my skill level or daily requirements. BUT there is nothing, absolutely nothing, like driving a RWD car on Rt 33 above Ojai at a healthy speed. At the end of the run, you are exhausted, because every bit of your senses and skills are necessary to drive the car. It was a rush, much like bombing a mountain bike downhill 3000 feet.

But, the car was difficult to drive, and did not function, for me as a daily driver. So last weekend, I traded my GT2 (2002) for a 996tt w/X50. I regret it beyond everything, but I am much happier, on a day-to-day basis with the 996tt. I miss the transmission, clutch, sound, suspension and road feel of the GT2. But the 996tt is only a tiny bit behind the GT2 in all of those areas. In fact, if I had never owned the GT2, I would think that the 996TT is the best car ever built. And if you want to tour, drive hard, and hit the twisties, the 996tt gives you an experience only slightly below the GT2.

I wish I had kept the GT2 because it is a unique car, one that every afficianado knows. But let's face it, the 996tt is also a rare car.

I tell you what. I think Porsche just makes the best driving cars in the world. They exceed everything out there, except for maybe the very best M's out of BMW. And then it would be a tie.

Comparing a GT2 to 996tt is like trying to compare Cameron Diaz to Sandra Bullock (change the names to suit your age group and/or personal preference). There might be some reason to prefer one over the other, but I certainly wouldn't throw either out of the house for leaving the toilet seat down.

Hey Yellow996tt,

So what goodies did you pend $11K on?

Ya know, when these are the decisions that plague you on a daily basis, life can't be that bad
I have been going over the decision to buy a GT2 for the last several months, all the while tweaking the TT. The Turbo, is where I want it, HP is up to 550, suspension is perfect for the track and handling, exhaust note is what I was looking for after 4 different systems. I can't imagine the stock GT2 being better outside of appearance.
The 2WD vs AWD thing?.
This brings to mind something an instructor pilot told me in military flight school a long time ago. After transitioning to an advanced aircraft, I commented on how the new ship was so much easier to fly, almost by itself...He replied "Son your just not flying fast enough or low enough". To me I guess its similar to the standard TT, it just allows you to push the envelope a little farther before the scary stuff happens.

Sure there is! Just wait till the car is 21 years old, and you can bring it over titled as a classic. Thats not too long of a wait either!

I took my GT2 autocrossing today, with only 400 miles I had to "stay off" it. However, it was everything I wanted, and more, in the handling department. It's much firmer and much more nimble than the TT (IMHO). If you have a performance bone in your body, GRAB THOSE GT2s while you can. You will not be disappointed, no way no how!

As a point of reference I kept missing gates today the course ws described as " the gates of hell", and one guy offered to ride with me (a top autocrosser with a heavily modified 916 and consistent TTOD driver) , He had rides earlier in a heavily modified TT and stated that the GT2 was awesome compared to this TT. Just one persons opinion. (Note, everybody was missing gates)

Laguna Seca on Monday and Tuesday should provide some more fun (restrained off course), 'til I pass the break-in period.

All I can say is My Oh My!.
