If a signif part of your criteria is something that's 'good off the line', then choosing a 911 may be your 1st mistake.
As for dif between stick & tip........you'll find many threads in the archives. They pretty much range from those who can make good points for the existance of a tip in the 911 (physical impairments, older folks etc)....all the way to those who say if they lived in traffic that was forcing them to consider a tip, they'd move <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> .

Granted, the car will pull 1.8x sec 60ft times with a 3500rpm launch, but that is not something that I recommend you doing all of the time and you will get some rather wild wheel hop. The 996 Turbo is not made for drag racing.
However, to answer your question, you will NOT get beat off of the line with either the manual or tiptronic in most circumstances.

I have a tip only for 2 reasons:
1. It was the only turbo the dealer had at the time
2. I live in LA (aka one big freeway parking lot)
As far as power difference - I'm sure there is some, but it's definitely not noticeable to the untrained driver. Every once in awhile I yearn for the ability to shift the old fashioned way, but all I have to do is step on the gas and that yearning goes right out the window and I can see it in the rear view mirror along with everyone else.

i has 2 tips, before a stick TT. they are great off red lights as you can just stomp on it, whereas i would never do a drop clutch drag from a dead stop with a stick; my constitution does not allow me to abuse cars that way.
and in real use, the tip is not much slower if at all on the street. and we now know you can mod a tip, add HP, etc., which at first was not recommended.

a naturally aspirated 996 (stick or tip)IMHO cannot beat the SL55 or E55 on a 0-60 sprint. Now throw some curves into the mix and we'll see who's boss.
The Turbo on the other hand, should be able to beat both cars on 1/4 mile and definitely on curves.

Hey man,
You were saying "we now know you can mod a tip"... I was just wondering because I haven't seen much in the way of people doing this (other than myself). Any info you care to share? Currenly, I'm chipped, DVs, straight pipes, filter, DVs and about to put some bigger hybrid turbos on. All I ever hear is how the tranny might not take it, so any info/experience you have would be much appreciated.

Stick is a lot more work to drive but if you are looking for a toy besides just a mean for transportation, I'd go for a stick.
We tried both before we decided to get the stick. There is that much more you can learn and play with a stick like heel-and-toe, rav match, and others. If you go to the track, you will also notice that the extra gear (6 vs. 5 in tip) would give you more options along the curves and in the straights that your time will eventually be better than a tip (let along the power loss from the torque converter).

It sounds like to me in the back of your mind you want the 6 speed. If so, don't get the Tip. Find the right car or you will regret it and probably end up buying a 6 speed in the future anyway. My personal opinion is "No clutch no class".

sharky,
email mike schatz at schatz motorsport about mod.g a tip if you are willing to have him do the work, he is outstanding. i never did do a tip, but mike and i discussed it when i was considering a TT lighweight concept, but i bought another gt2 instead.
