Angry Acceleration with 996tt X50 with tip

I bought this car with tip because it was available. But I'm very disappointed with one aspect of the car. When you hop off the line, even downshifted to 1, it just seems to take a while to get moving. I can't believe I have that bad of turbo lag, but it's cause me problems.

Now once I have the turbo going, downshifting with tip is fun, because this car goes like lightning.

Am I just a bad driver, not doing something wrong. Or is it just normal. Or is there an engine problem.

Hate to have to dump this car for a M3 Cab with SMGII

Hmm, lets see......if you're talking leaving the line from a dead dig I would suggest experimenting with some power-braking (foot on brake, give it a little gas to bring up the RPMs and then pull your foot off the brake swiftly and floor it). The Tiptronic is probably the most advanced traditional automatic transmission with torque convertor but it won't launch quite like a 6-speed no matter how hard you try.

As for getting an E46 M3, other than the fact that you'll look like the biggest yuppie ever in the convertible (dunno if you mind this feature, some like it some hate it) you'll probably end up floating the valves and destroying the motor like so many others already have.

And if or when you go to a BMW sponsored drivers ed event and watch the Porsche's blowing on by, you might wish that you still had one!

Well, he would still have his 2002 996 GT2.

As I've said a million times. I don't race. I'm a poser. I commute with my GT2, but it's one heck of a commute!!!! But to tell you the truth, I'd trade straight up my GT2 for well appointed brand new 996 Turbo with the X50 upgrade. That low suspension is demolishing my kidneys, cause they keep hitting the roof of my mouth!

I might do a change on the diverter valves. I've read a few things on the Audi TT forum about them.

But I still think there's a lag when I jump on the car. I've also figured out that Tip defaults to 2nd gear at a stop. Probably some gas guzzler prevention step. It sucks. I think my Audi defaults to 1st gear, but I'm not sure.

Orange,

I understand that it feels like it does not "jump" off the line, but I assure you that 99.9% of any car next to you, including a 6speed Turbo, will be left at the light! Most people cannot engage a very fast take off! I had a Turbo Tip and no problem polishing off anyone who tried. Just keep your foot planted and hold on tight.
Now about trading that GT2! Just say the word! I have a silver x-50 with full Carbon fiber package. I will arrange delivery to you! Let me know.
Steve.

PS: Not kidding about the trade!

heya orange, I beg to differ with you on this.. I have a stock 996 Turbo tip and recently went to a drag strip for some 1/4mile runs. 12.5 is pretty good considering I ballsed up and went with PSM on (long story). Also had a passenger with me...

I've played some with launches and so far the best results have come like this:
1)Turb PSM off (duh)
2)Downshift to 1st
3)Brake and pull up the hand brake (let go of the brake and make sure you don't move)
4)Press the break in all the way and then rev up to 3000rpm.
5)When the lights are green (or amber etc..) drop the hand brake, let go of the brake pedal and mash the gas, and hold on.

Trust me it pins you back good and proper.

I'm pretty sure I could run a 12.3 or .2.

So it's not GT2 fast, but it's only a little slower.

Well is there going to be a trade or not?

X-50 Speeder, you'll end up killing yourself with that thing! Don't expect me to get in a GT2 with you, especially when you try it out under the "Overpass" and or practicing your Twila-starts. On second thought, Twila-starts would be funner than hell in that thing!
