Post Serpentine belt

Came back from DE this weekend, my friend's TT ran well, but on the way home, the engine overheated. Looked inside the engine bay and the serpentine belt is frayed/shredded. Who knows what happened and is this normal? No overrevving, shifting to the wrong gear, etc... Seems to me that the bearing or the pulley for the belt is out of line. What a shame, but what fun we had.
