Post Wheel Spacers...Good/Bad???

Hi...

I've never used wheel spacers before, but I saw a picture on the TechArt website with a 996TT with the spacers, and it gives it a nice, agressive stance to the car.

Do wheel spacers help/hurt handling, or are just pure cosmetic improvements to the car?

Thanks!
Chris

It also depends on the size of the spacer. For example, the GT3 comes with 5mm spacers as standard. This is mostly for brake caliper to wheel clearance but it also gives the car a slightly wider track which helps balance. At 5mm, the suspension can handle the increased stress.

On the other hand, PCA Club Racing bans or discourages the use of spacers that are not factory standard because they can cause premature suspension failure.

Bump

hehe ....

But seriously a good question and answers. Anyone care to explain how much wider you can go pre and post stiffer springs, rubber removal etc..? Would be keen to hear what you might you've tried and how it worked. Cheers, Matt

I've got 15mm all round with stock suspension. I've got Alcon 365mm floating discs and GT2 6pot calipers on the front, so needed it for clearance. Once they were on the front, the rears looked stupid, so done them too. Car handles great. I'm also about to fit new rears tyres ( 315/30/18 ) and fronts ( 235/40/18 ) which are slightly larger than factory fitted here in the UK. What size tyres do you guys fit?

spacers. thread date. 2001 never mind.

i once ran hr 7mm and 15mm spacers with 315/30/18's and liked the stance, but i decided to go with the more dignified 9x12" wheels in gt2 sizes and get properly stanced without the *need* for spacers.

Oops! My VERY (low humor threshold) bad, sorry! Forgot I revived it from 2001!

Re stance - I'm limited by what's available slick wise ie 280 instead of 310+ but key is whether stock suspension builth by design gods in Stgrt can deal/enjoys the extra leverage?

Here is my thought, if the furthest away point -(outside edge of tire)- from the fulcrum - (what ever suspension component we are worried about) - remains the same from 280 slicks with spacers, as a 310+ without spacers, then the leverage should be the same. I am sure someone can lookup the physics formula to verify this leverage question.

that LMBGus is a very good point and actually argues that I should be using spacers if I can't get 300+ slicks here - thanks. One argument goes that without improving the suspension it makes not sense to put extra load on the setup w the spacers.

I'm not sure the co-efficient of torsion ( lol) is the same for the spacer and the suspension bits but it must be reasonably close, and by using the spacer the rubber is effectivly in the same place wth the narrower wheel, right? Very kind to point that out.
