"but it took ex-F1 drivers and 30 Chrysler engineers to get decent performance out of them."
What is your point?
The Le Mans winning cars were driven by the likes of Justin Bell, Olivier Beretta, etc. Few were ex-F1 drivers, and those that did had very short F1 careers. The Oreca Viper car dominated racing for years until restrictions made them uncompetitive. As for engineers, it took more than 30 engineers, between Chryster and Oreca, to build the car; I suspect that Porsche had more engineers that that working on their 98 winning car.
De Chaunac won Le Mans before his relationship with Chrysler and I suspect he will win again. He runs a hell of a race team.

Own a Porsche and love the Vipers too. The two reasons why I only have one supercar in the garage are:
1. Only have a 3 car garage and need places for the SUV and Wifemobile.
2. I'm only a doctor, not a CEO.

Hodel-
No I don't quote magazines because they are junk, they are just good for the pictures. I personally live 45 min from the Ring and from what I see, this being on the F1 circuit, Porsches will take on the Vipers until its to the straight aways. I do hear its a different story when it comes to 24HRS and ZAKSPEED is representing. Not sure if you have seen ZAKSPEED drivers in person but they are no joke on the North Loop. Just my tid bit of info on where i come from.

dpj,
I believe I was at Willow Springs the day you mentioned in your post. I recall this silver turbo down the straight. Deceptively fast until it is well past the fans and the Doppler effect comes into play. You know what it sounded like? It sounded like an F-14 going way fast. The driver of the Blue Viper seemed a little green. Your car is one of the few cars I've seen that actually looked "scarry fast".
