Post Evo Magazine tests Turbo 'S'

I think it may just be the X50 option, but it had a really nice spoiler I've never seen on a 996TT before. Has anyone seen this article? Anyone have more pictures of the spoiler?

It is the X50 performance pack, and the spoiler you see is part of the factory Aerokit available here in the UK.
No idea what kind of Aerokit you get in North America however.
I have the magazine and I can scan the article if you want...

I've just dug it out and it would be huge if I did
It's a group test with the 996X50, 575M, Vanquish and Murcielago.
Upshot is they are blown away by the 996X50's power and speed, and it's overall ability, and on these points it wins hands down over all the others.
However, it finishes in second place (to the Lambo) because "It reduces the aquisition of speed to an abstract concept. It's a bit too X-Box and not enough X-Factor. At best it's a ***** in an all but impregnable suit of armour."

Other typical moto-journo waffle about Italian style and temprament etc etc.

The other thing you get from the article by reading between the lines is that if the Porsche cost £60,000 more, they probably would've given it first place.
They were a bit taken aback that such a "cheap" (in context with the others' price tags) could embarass the others <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

This issue of Evo is definetly worth getting. The article is great and there is an awesome photo of these great cars, all in silver, parked next to a picturesc lake. It is one of the best auto pictures I've ever seen. I am planning on having it made into a poster.

This is great read if you are a Porsche owner and especially if you are a 996tt owner. It demonstates how capable and in most instances, superior, the 996tt is to virtually any other sports car made at this time.

During the latter part of a full throttle acceleration run, the Murcielago driver assumed he had a huge gap on the field, only to look in his rear view mirror and find that the turbo was so close that he could - quote: "see the whites of the turbo drivers eyes". In the handling test, on a mountain road section, the turbo was the hands down winner - the other cars could not keep up.

A very interesting article that continually praised the 911, but in the end gave top honors to the Murcielago because they like their exotic cars a little "rude".

Luca,

It is issue #47 - Sept. 2002. They call it "The supercar issue". No specs, more of an informal shootout with driver comments.

I think that Evo magazine is different in Italy, I have the september evo in front of me and there is a Enzo Ferrari in the first page and inside an interesting article about all ferrari's v8.

Evo
Il brivido della guida
026 settembre 2002

P.S. Can you scan it please, I'd like to read the article, thank You very much.

Luca,

I don't have a scanner, maybe someone else here can scan it. Have you tried contacting EVO magazine in the UK. I am sure they will mail you a copy.

Id scan it but I don't have a scanner anymore.

Luca, the Enzo on the front is the correct issue, but I don't recall anything about Ferrari V8's in the issue. Must be different for you Tifosi's.

ok, I've read the article, very interesting but I haven't understood it completly.
I know english not so well to understand every word.
For example what does it mean:
- The 911 Turbo shrink-wraps around you...
- The Porsche is the nuclear bunker of bomb-proof perspectives, the benchmark tht won't rub out...
- The all drive 911 turbo delivers such mind-bending pace and ability that it simply achieves more for given input from the driver than any other car here (or on the planet, I suspect).
- No car makes the jump to warp speed seem more effortless and containable than this 911.
- Rushes you to three- figures speeds in a breath...
- with this upgrade to 450 bhp, the 911 turbo certainly isn't scratching for acceleration. Treated to a brutal (as in strictly test track) lunch, it can probably dip under four to sixty and split the Ferrari and Lambo to 100 mph.
- ...and here the Porsche's size-to-grip-to-grund ratio make it .....
- flick-flacks???????
- what the 911 Turbo experience lacks is depht and texture. It reduces the acquisition of speed to an abstract concept. IT'S A BIT TOO X-BOX AND NOT ENOUGHT X-FACTOR.(????????)
Thank you!

Ok I'll have a stab at it
- The 911 Turbo shrink-wraps around you...
Meaning that it "adapts" and "fits" you and your particular driving style, and feels like an extension of yourself as opposed to something you are merely stting in.

- The Porsche is the nuclear bunker of bomb-proof perspectives, the benchmark tht won't rub out...
It doesn't matter how hard other manufacturers try, the Porsche is always the car that others strive to beat.

- The all drive 911 turbo delivers such mind-bending pace and ability that it simply achieves more for given input from the driver than any other car here (or on the planet, I suspect)...
The 911 acheives it's amazing performance with the minimum of fuss.

- No car makes the jump to warp speed seem more effortless and containable than this 911.
Same as above plus the fact that the driver always feels in control of the car's performance

- Rushes you to three- figures speeds in a breath...
More of the above two, referring particularly to the 911's acceleration, it will reach 100mph before you have a chance to breath in

- with this upgrade to 450 bhp, the 911 turbo certainly isn't scratching for acceleration. Treated to a brutal (as in strictly test track) launch, it can probably dip under four to sixty and split the Ferrari and Lambo to 100 mph...
They are estimating the 911's 0-60mph time to be less than four seconds, and it's 0-100mph time to be between that of the other two cars mentioned. (I suspect it would beat them both in fact).

- ...and here the Porsche's size-to-grip-to-grunt ratio make it .....
It's a small-ish car with huge power and massive grip.

- flick-flacks???????
Gymnastic tumbling!

- what the 911 Turbo experience lacks is depht and texture. It reduces the acquisition of speed to an abstract concept. IT'S A BIT TOO X-BOX AND NOT ENOUGHT X-FACTOR.(????????)
This is where they are saying they "like" the more flambouyant nature of the Italian Supercars, that driving extremely quickly in the Porsche is a bit like playing a video game (as opposed to struggling with the car).

Hope this helps!

Alan.
