Is this the timing chain tensioner noise?
I purchased a 2002 996TT about two weeks ago. It's got about 5K miles on it. From the start I noticed a rattle/knock coming from the engine compartment only at idle. It sounds like clutch bearings. But I don't think it could be clutch bearings as it makes the noise even when the clutch petal is depressed. What is this noise?
Also, how much oil consumption is normal for these cars at 5K miles. It looks like, from the on board computer's measurement, that the car has burned about half a quart in 300 miles... Is that unusual?
Thanks in advance.

I've been surfing a bit on the web and found a few references to the timing chain tensioner as the likely cause for this noise. The few places I've run across this reference, they say "all 996TTs make the noise to some extent or another" and "there's no fix".
Does this sound correct?

Im no mechanic or car expert, but from what my tech tells me, every 996TT has a weird noise (he heard mine making one too). The funny thing is that no two have the exact same noise...very interesting.

The noise you are referring to is a common noise which eminates from the internal IMS gears. Rev it up to beyond 2K and it should disappear. Its normal. Using different type of oils as noted above can reduce the noise but will not get rid of it totally. I get over 3000 miles per 1/2 qt

Ditto Kevin - the intermediate shaft rattle is totally normal on these cars. Both of mine have it, the coupe a little louder than the cab. The top Porsche tech in my area told me to quit worrying about it and that they all do it to some extent.

Being that your car only has 5k miles on it there is a real chance your engine hasn't even been properly broken in yet. Try a different oil and drive that baby. The IMS noise will probably quiet down and the oil consumption will probably decrease as well.
