I finally drove the CARRERA GT !!!
Yesterday in my Metro Area was the "GERMAN CARFEST"
My buddy and I decided to go at the last minute, and he asked me
if I wanted to drive his Carrera GT to the event?
I kindly accepted and he drove my 996TT. The event was about
30 miles away which was 3/4 highway and about 1/4 city driving.
Impressions:
Upon start up...you know there is a tiger behind you!
parking and manuevering is easy except rearward visibility--he has
a tricky driveway to get out of.
I let it warm up by short shifting and taking it very, very, easy.
His advice: very easy to drive and it will do whatever you want it to do:
spin the tires in first, second, or third gear, it will, too much gas on a clover
leaf and you may "loop it", etc.
I then came to a stoplight with a long (1 mile uphill) and a cement divider
between me and the oncoming lanes. Feather the throttle and clutch,
no problem--take off, ease into first, go thru second and third and I am
above 100 mph. The shifts are very direct and mechanical feeling, the clutch
that has been talked about was easy to modulate and take off from stops-no
problem. It does require more effort to push in than my 996TT, but is definitely
easier to drive than my old 993TT with ltwt flywheel and racing disc.
One thing I noticed right away, (there are (3) Carrera GT's in my lovely state),
is that young people will drive like absolute "*** clowns" to try to catch up
to you and have a look or snap a picture on their damn cell phones!
As you know the car has no PSM but does have a TC button (traction control).
I never touched the TC button so traction control was always on, I did make
the tires sing in first gear (Yeah I know, I just had to), and the TC does not
grab them agressively like in other cars.
To recap, the car when driven with respect and a little bit of authority, rewards
like no other, it is an amazing piece of engineering and you feel like your hips
are connected to the half shafts and that any input you give it will respond with
direct and accurate feedback. You can make people look at you just by
blipping the throttle--heads will crane as soon as you do.
When I reached the car show (put on by local Mercedes/BMW clubs), they
spread the ropes, invited us in and as I threaded thru the crowd and feathered
the clutch masterfully, I was the "belle of the ball", I felt like a hero the way
people looked and responed by snapping pics right and left. They had me
park sideways in front of the ORDWAY theatre and when I got out I was more
or less mobbed with questions....Quite a way to experience my first drive
in my buddy's CGT.

GreggT,
I was very torn up about not making the drive to Madison, however
my forlorned look soon changed when my buddy handed me the keys!
The car is truly as great as I expected, I will say however our 996TT's
have a very nice torque curve (when properly "set-up"), and I still
enjoyed getting back in my car.

Marty...this post is absolutely worthless without pics....just kidding, but didn't you get any? I would be very anxious to drive someone elses CGT or any other exotic...I might just have to have one. Thanks for the nice write-up..and the assurance that our cars aren't so bad either!
