I had an `85 928 5 speed w/ the 288HP 4 valve engine. BTW - S4 in later models refers to the 4th body style not the 4 valve motor. It was a lot of fun, sort of a big GT car with an unusual look. Lots of people would ask me what it was. The V8 has lots of torque, but the car is heavy. Maintenance is high on these cars IMO, which is why I got out of mine.
Other P-car I would have..... would have to be a cab, maybe a 993, but possibly even a boxster S.

To be candid, I think the way the suspension is tailored, the cars feel heavier then they are. 3400-3500 pounds isn't that far from the latest 996TT. 4 is for the fourth series. There were only two body styles.
The big feeling always catches people. The car is shorter, I believe, then the 996.
It is so big, yet so small.

CBG,
If you think the 993 is raw, hammer a 964 Turbo at about 3,500 RPM!
My "next" should that ever occur, might just be a Cayman, given the combination of handling and power.

well on second thought, I have to be honest I already have a cayenneS as a daily driver so I have to change my answer to that. then you really have the best of both worlds.

I'd take a 904, or a Speedster if I wanted to go back in time. The 928 was great in its time (and I drove several models when they were new), but it won't impress you compared to more modern cars. The complexity issues have been addressed. If you could get a 1994 manual trans, low miles car, it might work out. I don't think I would look at a high miles early series. AS
