Default Dealer Ripoff - Service

Fellow enthusiasts-

Had my '02 996 TT in today for it's 30k service...got a phone call this afternoon informing me that my side blinker (the one above the front bumper) was "cracked" and had allowed water to seep in. This apparently necessitates a replacement of the socket.

"Ok, fine, how much?"

$49 or so for the light, $120 for labor...

Ok, so I hate to nickel and dime but I don't throw money away either. Is labor to replace a blinker socket really $120? If I get charged an hour's labor for that, I'm going to blow a gasket.

Any thoughts?

By "side blinker" do you mean the blinker in the headlight assembly?

No, the one between the bumper/nosepiece assembly and the front quarter panel...rectangular orange blinker.

That's not a blinker - it's a side marker light (illuminates steady with the lights on).

You can get the light assembly for less than $49, but I don't know what kind of job it is to get to/replace the socket it plugs into. The side light assembly is a 20 second replacement job...just pops out.

How is this a dealer rip-off? Sure, it's not cheap or free but it's not a rip-off. It is going to take a mechanic some time to cut the wires and install a new socket, etc. They need to get paid for their time. Seems totally reasonable to me.

I'm sure Porsche clearly states how much should the client be charged for!

Actually, they do. They are marked in "TU" on the invoice and in the workshop manuals, TSB's, etc.
For non warranty work, it is at the discretion of the dealership/service manager.
If you are in doubt regarding an hour, I would ask the service manager/service advisor. I'm sure they will work with you.
