15000 miles on my 01TT and recently I've noticed that when I kill the engine I hear 3-4 quick knocks in succession as the engine stops. The Porsche mechanic heard it and immediately said that it's my dual-mass flywheel. To prove it he had me kill the engine while the clutch was engaged... no knocking sound.
So he tells me it's quite common, especially on TT's and that it won't affect the performance or reliability of the car. My car is under warranty and he says he can replace the flywheel, which requires the removal of engine and transmission.
Can anyone verify this is a common issue w/ no side effects? And should I have the flywheel replaced? And if I have it replaced is there anything else I should do to my stock car while it's torn apart?
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Welcome.. They don't heal themselves.. They get worse. If they say to replace it, have them replace it. I'd upgrade the pressure plate and install a new clutch disk.. You most likely will have to pay for that.. But its basically a free clutch job..

I like and recommend the Sachs Motorsports pressure plate with the GT2/GT3 disk...
If you have a hydraulic tranny jack and a support harness made to suspend the engine, many shops and dealerships are leaving the engine in and are just removing the transmission.

Totally agree with Kevin and that is just what I have done. I'm not a mechanic but I know the engine was not removed to do my tranny and clutch job at the dealer.

Today I was told that the X50 clutch (throwout, pressure plate and disc) is much more heavy duty and a great replacement. Is this comparable to the GT2/GT3 package? Maybe I can get the X50 pressure plate and throwout while using the GT2/GT3 disc?

Not at all. In fact this job can be done in half the time the book says. Do not let anyone tell you different. I have never removed the motor to do a clutch, in any of the TTs for that matter.
Also the pressure plate and the flywheel are the same as the TT/GT2. The Disc are different though. Thats it.

Is there a chance that worn/damaged oem flywheel may be causing some noise during driving? I have a noise that is similar to going in reverse/worn bearing/grinding that comes from the back when I accelerate, it is not there when I am coasting or in neutral. Also it is audible in high gears mostly, not to be really heard in 1st or 2nd.
