All of these comments are hopefully helpfull for anyone considering a 996tt. I appreciate all the expertise and various opinions of the other board sponsors. Bottom line drive your cars don't let 'em sit. Mod if you want to or not if you don't. These cars are bad *** and will run with most anything out there. The porsche does so much more than just go fast. We are all fortunate to be able to experience such a machine on a daily basis. I consider all of you friends and appreciate your comments.

Not my bag at all, but each to their own I say.

Most UK 996 TT's in OPC's seem to be Tip, I cant understand why, other than when new the cars were bought by City boys who wanted auto mode for crawling around in traffic or older Porsche clientele who didnt have quick enough reactions to use a stick! (joking!).

It took me a while to find a manual in the OPC network, which I found odd.

I had Tip on the Cayenne Turbo, and it was poo....but then, it wasnt a TT so not really comparable I suppose. I also had Tip on a Boxter I had in 98, and that REALLY was terrible.

You cant beat a stick for a really engaging experience IMHO.

Here's a tiptronic car that looks completely stock on the outside but then look underneath and it's got all kindsa goodies that will literally make it spank most 6speeds out there. It's got the GT640 kit on it, with the boost hoses, FVD headers and a Europipe Stage II exhaust as well as the Evo Intake system. It spools up so fast (way quicker than my car) and the low end torque is phenominal. It has to be very close to if not already a 10 second car. truly brutal...

That is a beast. Other than you and very few others can probably even drive car on a track with sufficient degree of talent to even be concerned about whether a tip or manual is faster.

...would be a 9 without the Tip -- who says size doesn't matter.

Sharky,
In your experience, where is the tip an advantage? AS

I will honestly say this, other than knowing a few tricks at the drag strip in terms of launching I am no Cort Wagner on the road course... However, all the pro drivers that have driven my car (Cort, Johannes Van Overbeek and Darren Law plus a couple of others) have said that my car is increadibly easy to drive so darn fast. It gives the ability for an ordinary driver to drive a car at the track very quickly with minimal fuss and danger. Walter Rohl kicked *** with the tip also... Now it's not all "party time" and there are a few hiccups. Cort found on the odd occasion it wouldn't follow his lead on the shifting as did Darren but once you get used to it, for example hit the button to shift a couple of hundred rpms before redling and then it actually shifts just above redline (a nice easter egg) you can really fly. A lot of my friends do ssay it's too easy to drive the car on the track and they get way too confident. I don't think it makes you a better driver by any means but instead gives you false confidence...

You have to be a far better driver in a 6speed to match the times you would get with an ordinary driver in a Tip. But owning a 6speed and assuming you are god's gift to shifting perfectly, you will do so lap after lap after lap with the 6speed. The tip might have a hiccup or two...

LOL buddy it's not half bad. I really dig the owner. He's a very nice, quiet and understated chap. His car looks bone stock to the t. I mean orange side markers, gold badge, stock wheels and tires and then bingo you pop the hood or look underneath and it's nasty! Of all the Turbos that EVO makes, I have to say the ones that are used in the 640 and 700 packadges are my favorite. They truly spool up and hit hard down low. Talking to Garrett a few days ago about his car we were chatting about those being _the_ best for a street car. I believe he will use those for his own car.. Someday when I grow up and stop drag racing a road course car I'll likely do the same...

Hi Alexander,

See my response to doug on that but I drive both almost ever day and in every condition. If I could, honestly I would have both for different reasons.

From a launch, I believe I've had the fastest 60 foot time to date (on video too) of a 1.67 with street tires and it was raining that same morning so the track was wet. I didn't even launch as hard as I could. With drag radials and so on I can do better. That day there were Mustangs, Camaros with slicks and skinnies pulling 1.9-2.1s- that is how bad the conditions were. I'll dig out the video.. and you can see it was wet, freezing cold and foggy as hell. They even closed a lane for safety. So having said all that, I can pretty much outlaunch any 6speed car with the Tip. I did that consistently at the European Car shoot in December of 03... ask Stephen, Kevin or anyone else that was there, my best launch (where their computer broke) was the best one of the day and no doubt a 10. My second best launch got us an 11.13 and 2nd place....

The other advantage is on the road course for drivers that are NOT advanced (such as myself) where we can focus more on lines and have two hands on the wheel at ALL times (really that helps) and just bomb our way around with shifting being at the touch of a button. I wish and know that the next generation will have DSG...

Other advantages I can think of is, to get to 900HP and still be on the stock tranny is something else. Really all the cars that are 600 and above we change out for beefier clutches and so forth.

Finally I love that people underestimate the Tip- it's always fun to suprise them...

And then of course it is my wife's car so I have an excuse....
