Is buying a new 996ttS a bad idea right now?
While I saw the post with the 997 turbos testing in LA, I also know that you all are waaaaay ahead of me in the deposit line to acquire a new one and I'd be lucky to get one near MSRP by the end of 2008. That leads me to the question of whether it makes any sense to buy a new 996 now? I'm in no need for a new toy, but God that car has gotten under my skin!
Thanks for the en/dis-couragement.

996tt is a already a very fast and nice car. The question is would the 997tt be a lot more expensive? If money is not an issue for you, then it wouldn't be a bad idea to enjoy a 996tt for now while waiting for a 997tt.

I was in a similar dilemma at the beginning of the year. I decided to do the following: I bought a loaded '04 996TT Cab about 6 months ago (it had about 2500 mi, which is really nothing) and saved the first year of depreciation ($20k). I will keep it until the 997tt Cab arrives (which is probably the 2d or 3d production year of the 997tt coupe, which I figure lands me in about 2009). So, I have nearly new 996TT for a good price AND in about 4 years I'll step up tp the 997tt.

If you really felt the urge to buy a 997tt, I bet you could find some place that you would be that far down on the list. I agree with some of the other posts, I think you could pick up a low mile 996tt and drive it for a year and then but a 997tt. I am sure the introduction of the 997tt will be hot for a period of time and then the prices will cool off. I don't think I would buy a new 996tt right before a model change, unless you plan of keeping it for a while.

Sorry, I was trying to say you "wouldn't" be that far down on the list.

i agree with the previous posters-i would buy a low mileage 03 or newer car, for under 100k. i really love mine-my biggest decision is what to do with mine-my 03 comes off lease in 8 months, i will have 39k miles on it at that time and my buy back will be 79k. i could never afford a new 997tt and i really am tempted just to buy it at lease end. what would you guys do? i use mine as daily 4 season transportation in the northeast.

Sounds like I made a big mistake, in the eyes of some here, but I don’t regret buying a new tt. I will break it in the way I want to and know the history of the car from day one. I felt like your feeling and I bought it. Good luck on your decision

mike-you didn't make a mistake-you liked the car, and you bought it. i agree with you, you break it in, etc. buying a lightly used one might be more cost effective, but if you have the money for a new one, why not get one?

It makes sense in some situations to buy a car off lease, others not. Porsches and the emotional attachment is a big factor, as are certain company perks. Some corps/practices lease the cars for you, you can buy it at the end (if it's a special car), you've essentially gotten a new porsche for half price, and you're the only one whose ever driven/farted /eaten in the car. Not for everybody, not for all cars.
