Default racing gas at 76 station

I live really close to a 76 gas station that sells 100 octane racing gas from the pump. I've been mixing 50/50% racing gas and 91 octane-is this a waste or will it help performance?

What car is it? I think you need an ecu upgrade. Where are you located I've been looking for it myself?

Live in Orange county, CA. I think I'll do an ECU upgrade after I've had the car for sometime - still under warranty and I want tomake sure I'm not dealing with any engine/tranny problems before I start messing with major mods.

I just bought a used 2003 turbo X50, 6 spd. with aero. Only 5K miles on it.

It's mostly a waste unless you run a higher-octane program (aftermarket software). You may be gaining a few ponies, but nothing to write home about. I wouldn't waste your time until you get an aftermarket ECU with a 93/100 octane program where you can really take advantage of it. Your factory ECU is tuned for 91 octane.

the ECUs in our cars Porsches are tuned for 93.

that is why in califonia, many mix 100 with 91 to get somewhat higher than 93.

93 is recommended, and apparently unavailible prolifically in cali.

I agree, I thinks its a waste of money. The cars will adjust for octane, take a look at the sticker under your engine lid. There are tons of Porsche cars running around in states with only 91 showing no problems.

Powerwise? Though I wouldnt be able to back it up with dyno numbers, I would guess with a stock ECU and its conservative maps, you might gain 3-5 horsepower by running your gasoline cocktail.

I love this board.. a bunch of crazy car(Porsche guys) talking about our passion!

I think I will cut down to a 25%/75% high octane/91 premium mixture -save a few $ (racing gas is $5.35 per gasllon at the 76 pump)

That should get me close to 93-94 octane and that should be ideal for the car.

Thanks for the solid input!

True that the ECU will adjust for the octane.. But what it is adjusting is timing and boost.. At 9.2:1 compression these cars need good fuel when one starts to dial in boost with larger turbochargers and ECU uprated for more power.. At .8bar the car will adapt at 91..

SO where exactly is this 76 station? I get my 103 octane VP fuel at a station in Orange (very close to the Orange circle, on Chapman). I run 100% race fuel since I have all sorts of mods and run 1.3 bar. It would be nice to know of another close by source.

I work right by the 76 fullerton location - they are typically .50 cents less than the 76 off La Paz - which is about $5.49 per gallon.
