Default FVD Sport Intercoolers

Has anyone used these? They appear to be 100% bolton but they look like X50 intercoolers to me.

I have and I also am looking at the Wagner intercoolers but I believe both require *some* trimming

Those are just 997.2 intercoolers with a markup. They are the most cost effective and efficient option up to around 650hp. The end tanks leaking is about as overblown as the IMS issue on M96 engines. Just use a set of pliers and gently squeeze around the tanks before install to make sure they are crimped properly, it takes less than 5 minutes.

You will need to trim a bit with these as well as they are thicker than the OEM units.

I have a set of new do88 intercoolers for sale. I also have the OEM upper ducts I can sell that have already been trimmed. My new do88 intercoolers came with CF upper ducts.

Save your money and get something with metal end tanks. No proper intercooler should have plastic components.

Don't overpay for those. The 997.2 coolers are a solid option up to about 1.4 bar or so. The plastic end tanks work fine you just have to stay within their limitations.

So I take it there are no aftermarket intercooler options that don't require trimming? I suppose that makes sense since the bigger cores won't exactly fit in where the stock ones reside.

It's because the OEM end tanks are wider/thicker than the cores. The ducts have a lip to make up the difference and ensure air is directed through the core and not around it.

All aftermarket cores/end tanks mate flush so trimming that lip off is necessary.

Since I have been looking at used intercoolers for a day or so, I don't even think these are the 997.2 units. The inlet end tank is very small/narrow and the top and bottom of the core do not have the bent tabs the .2 intercoolers have. I think these are just .1 intercoolers.

And there's this: "Bolt-on-upgrade kit. Simple installation with no cutting, welding or modifying of mounting brackets" If they were .2 intercoolers they would not drop right in. $1800 for stock performing intercoolers, yikes.

Funny, I was just going to write the same thing. The intercoolers in the picture are not 997.2 intercoolers, they are 997.1 intercoolers which are only a negligible upgrade from the factory 996 units and would be a huge waste of money.

Yeah, the 997.2 GT2RS intercoolers definitely don't just drop right in. I think I spent ten hours on the install of mine? And that was with having pwdrhound's shrouds to copy...

The stock intercoolers are good for 500 WHP I believe. I suppose if I go K24 I'll bite the bullet.

I don't think they are restrictive until you get to big horsepower numbers.

If you got a nice tune and some 997.2 intercoolers with a few supporting mods I think you would be really happy with that setup with a tiptronic car. Maxing out the k16s is a good way to go.
