What's the general consensus on this forum and platform when it comes to tuning? Have you tuned your engine and/or transmission? If you did, why did you do it, and if you didn't, what's holding you back?



We've been tuning Porsches for over 20 years at APR. You can see a list of Porsche Models we tune here. It's not all of them, but a good chunk of models. The software we have is also on sale until the end of October right now.



When it comes to some of the other brands we tune, some of the more high end models, like the Audi RS6 and the Audi RS3 are heavily tuned. On the RS3 front it's hard to find one that isn't tuned. We see the same on some Porsche models, but on others it seems some are hesitant.



So, what's your take on tuning?

 

Had your tune installed on two Audis and am super happy with them.
My 2004 996tt came with a tune (not sure which) and I removed it. First to get used to the car, but later decided that i like the stock/GT feel of the car better (smoother). Most of my driving is streetlight to streetlight and in slow traffic (taking kids to school and going to work). Without the tune it feels more laid back and in character with top down cruising.
Best of both worlds is having the Cobb and the ability to reinstall the tune when needed, so it’s there when necessary, but so far it’s been stock all along.

I've tuned every car (truck) I own except for the 991, as it is on warranty.

Tuning the 996 was an eye opening experience, especially after the AWD system was removed.

Now, I want more; tuning is highly addictive.

 

mine came with a tune that was undisclosed by the selling dealer. The only way to know what I had was to have the ECU bench read by Markski. Since I would have had to pay $500 to 'register' as the new owner on the previous tune and I would have had to buy a hand held tuner to get the stock tune I had Markski work his magic and give me back my stock tune.

I didn't plan on tuning the car so soon but I would rather work with a trusted tuner with up to date R&D and the ability to go back to stock so here I am. It feels about as fast as my Stage 2 RS3 was even if it won't be as quick (DSG vs 6spd)

 

Are any of your 996TT tunes CARB approved for California?

 

Pretty sure only Cobb has a CARB approved tune for a 996tt.

Considering your build, that comment made me laugh out loud.

 

I bought a high mileage manual 2 years ago. I believe it has a tune because it routinely boost to 0.9. Plus I converted it to RWD only so it's "lively". Sitting on coolers and a GT2 rear wing.
I also have a low mileage tiptronic no tune. All original except for H&R lowering springs which makes it handle like a scalpel. Its the only car to actually scare me.
So nah. Don't need a ECU tune.

I did get the MTM tune for my B5 RS4. Made it borderline dangerous on city streets. It sits on B8 Bilsteins all round, PU bushings for the front control arms and H&R rear springs. The OEM front springs were stiffer than H&Rs.

 

Mine I believe has a tune (1.0-1.1 bar on x50 car), but I am actively looking for ways to remove it and revert to fully stock due to other issues. Any suggestions as to best way to do this?

 

Take it to the dealer and have the factory files flashed over the tune.

 

Dealers I’ve spoken to here (south FL) don’t want to touch it for some reason. Keep referring me to tuners.

 

It can be over written with the OEM files, not sure why they wouldn't do that for you.

 

My 02 X50 hits .9 to 1.0 bar, Only mod I know of is IPD Plenum and BBi coils, I'm in CA and always passes smog. I don't think it has a tune, Last owner didn't know, but then again he didn't know it was an X50. I'm just leaving the way it is cause it's plenty fast

 

If you are seeing 1.0 bar then my guess is that your car is tuned.
