Nightmare after buying from pcarmarket
#61
I examine every car I purchase myself. I’m a pretty fair mechanic and have had quite a few Porsches. Never been burned yet. PPI’s in my opinion are good for someone that doesn’t know what to look for but they don’t pick up on everything. I trust myself more and if something happens I just have me to blame. I try to buy right cause you make money on the buy not the sell. If I can’t make a deal I walk. There’s plenty of fish in the sea. I also do plenty of research about problems before going to look at a car

No it's not, it's my personal experience and that's with me using recommended marque shops. I'm glad you've had such good experiences but clearly I haven't. At this point unless I've used the shop and know them I consider a PPI to be a complete waste of my time and money. I can tell a good car and do my own evaluation, hence me not buying anything out of state.
I posted a Thread on a 997 C4 Cab I purchased 2 years ago and used Porsche Burlingame to do PPI. They had PPI'd 4 previous cars for me(2 993's & 2 997 C4S) over past 14 year period and the same shop manager did all PPI's including this latest one.
Hector his name was always great guy, moving card from schedule to accomodate my PPI requests and I had always bought the guys in shop coffee/breakfast gift cards after I paid the PPI bill. I like tipping for great service.
They failed me on that last PPI. The passenger's seat had visually apparent marks from wet swimsuit of where the leather was malformed and slightly discolored. Also the Idler Pulleys were making noise.
I got my $525 PPI monery back and Dealership offered 2 free future PPI's/Bore Scope Inspections whenever I want them.
Cost me about $1100 for the pulleys and seat I lived with. When I sold the car I of course mentioned the seat in the description but buyer didn't care.
PPI is also important as negotiating tool and I could have used it to help with the Idler Pulley cost.
My mistake was letting the shop manager know the great deal I was getting on the car prior to the PPI because he tried using that as his excuse for his PPI failure.
You'd think a 14 year relationship with the same shop manager would mean something but when push comes to shove, people will do anything to protect their failure of an ***.

As many people have said above, caveat emptor. As the buyer it is your responsibility to verify claims of a vehicle’s condition, especially one so old. A PPI or in person viewing would have clearly identified these issues before you sent any money.
