New to me 996 Turbo

Back in town after a break and I was pleased to see a large box from suncoast! But, first things first, had to take the car out for a nice drive through some beautiful mountains capped with snow and some nice twists for about 50 miles. Such a fun car to drive. Engine moves around a bit and so does transmission. I have new mounts on order and hopefully they won’t be hard to change out.
what came today was some leatherique and so I completely douched the seats with the stuff and will let them soak overnight. I will keep doing that until they hopefully get soft and clean. They back seats look pretty nice but the fronts a hard, shiny, and filthy.
I received a 997 short shift kit and am looking forward to putting that in.
other things that arrived:
1. Window switch for door. When I pull the drivers door handle, the window rolls down as normal, but then it goes right back up. So hopefully that will fix it.
2. Floor matts
3. A variety of trim pieces that were missing or old.
4. Aluminum look gas cap. Ridiculously expensive. But will look good.
5. Steering column switch. One of the arms is loose.
The exciting part is that I received a data cable from Kevin today! I have to wait a couple of days for the pc laptop to come but excited to find out what chip is in it. Also, looking forward to see if there are any codes that will need to be fixed.

Did a little work yesterday on the antique.
1. 997short shift kit from suncoast. Took me a 2 hours to do overall. The instructions I got here https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...tal-996tt.html we’re excellent. Once you have the new ssk in, they recommend you test the gears with the car running before putting the center console back in. I took that to heart, and drove the car, ended up taking a half hour detour drive. The gears feel great and so easy to shift now! So basically, it’s an hour and a half job that is straightforward and highly rewarding.
2. Battery cover. My car came without one so I ordered one and put it on. Easy.
3. Hood latch trim. The old one was coming apart a little. Just dry and brittle, so I bought a new one. Easy and looks very nice. Pro tip: add a generous coat of 303 protectant and the plastic trim has a nice matt luster and it will be protected from uv damage. I put this on all the plastic stuff and it really makes things pop.
4. Gas cap. Aluminum look. It’s nice!

The cables. What kind are they? Don’t look stock to me.
Everything apart
With the cables, it’s important to mark the metal part where they were attached to the original shifter before disengaging them. This way, you can make sure the are properly aligned with the new shifter. If not, you may have problems engaging the gears.
New shifter in!
Final assembly done
Old trunk latch cover. You can see where the edge looks all ratty. It bothered my ocd.
New one in. So much better
Battery cover looks great
303. The best!
Old cap
New cap. Contrast looks nice!
Final note.not sure if it shows in the pictures, but the seats have a very glossy look. That is because I have literally douched them with leatherique rejuvenator over the last 48 hours and didn’t want to rub it off quite yet. I am hoping I can just keep that stuff on for awhile. Still a little chilly here. Keep the garage at 50-55 degrees so I figure that it’ll just take longer for the stuff to seep into the leather. Just not sure if I should leave it for a couple of weeks or take it off in a day or two. If you guys have any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them!

Next on the list of things to do is the door latch switch and the steering column stalk. I am also hoping to get some data on the car. I have a few other knick knacks to put on. The transmission mount arrives today, so maybe I will do that if it gets here early enough. Motor mounts were back ordered and not sure when they will come.
Needs list:
1. Aftermarket exhaust. Looking to pick up a used one. Thinking about Europipe, Soul or Kline. Would entertain other brand but I don’t want drone. Would like a nice rumble and to know it’s alive back there. Any thoughts on this?
2. OEM hollow spoke turbo twists or GT2 twists. Also would consider the optional spoke wheels they came out with in 2004-5. If anyone has a nice set for sale, hmu.
Things that I’m waiting for that will be a while are the OEM carbon fiber shifter from Porsche. Apparently, it’s a special order made by hand part that is made in Germany. I’ve been told middle of June. We shall see. I also have a. Very large order from dbcarbon in production. I think that will also be in June and I’m more optimistic with that.
I’m sure there will be more things to do. I have a new set of kw v3 sitting in a box that I didn’t end up using. Might put those on the car.

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I’ve owned this car. It truly is amazing. When I bought it, I knew it had some needs. I took it to the shop to change out the window regulator and fix a few things here and there. Now it’s turned into a restoration project for me. The car seems well cared for over the years but though the years have been kind to her, there are things that just need updating, so I’m going to add some posts here to catch up what has transpired over the last year and document what I plan to do moving forward. I don’t have much mechanical experience but I have a willingness to learn and understand that mistakes will be made along the way. I’ve learned a lot here on rennlist as well as 6sp and YouTube. Thanks to all here on this sub forum for your knowledge and expertise as well as inspiration. No matter what question I have, someone has always asked the same question before and shown the solution. So here goes.
First, was to add carbon fiber bits I purchased from db carbon. Great quality!
Before
After
Oem shifter. Took a year to receive from suncoast!
Ordered the wrong horseshoe so ordering the correct one from db carbon
Dash strips look gross. Going to put together another order from db carbon

Interior was filthy and the supple leather needs upkeep in order to stay looking nice. Ordered large bottles of leatherique conditioner and cleaner. Did two rounds of application and the leather is much better. Softer and cleaner. I will do another round of treatment with it when it gets warmer and then determine if I need to go any further with their dye/restoration products
Before
Shiny with conditioner on
Kept this stuff on for a few days with ambient heat in the summer. All the dirt and impurities wiped off later and it turned out much nicer than before. Still not perfect but that classic porsche smell is back now!

Now, on to the headlights. I ended up doing this twice. First, my headlights had lots of fogging and deep scratches. I bought the kit from griots and it did do a lot. Got them about 80% better, but when I posted pictures, i got some feedback on how good they could get. One guy posted a picture on how nice his came out with the sylvania kit. I was a little embarrassed but hey, I’m learning, so I bought the sylvania kit and redid them. Wow, what a transformation! I think they’re at about 95% now. Still some vestiges of the scratches and small amounts of fogging but I am happy. Big thanks to those who posted what is possible for the direction and inspiration!

This control stalk was a fun install. The lower left stalk was droopy, so I bought a new assembly and it works great now
New one installed
Missing the cap

So, the wheels that came with the car, were not my favorite. They were the classic 19” wheel size, but made the car look like it came out of a budget hip hop video from the 90s (apologies to the previous owner if you’re reading this). Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and there were only two wheel sets that were going to work for me: the classic stock turbo twist wheels or the kinesis F110 19” wheels (long discontinued). I also would’ve Ben very happy with the gt3 “look” wheels that were an option for the 2004-2005 models (correct me if I’m wrong). So, I guess 3 types of wheels. I ended up getting the turbo twists and wrapped the with Michelin ps4s. Have yet to have a drive, after being on the car for several weeks but it has just been too dang cold up here. I’m hoping for a go this week!
The old
Looks better in black and white, but since I’m not colour blind….
In with the new!
Very happy!!

Another project to keep the winter blues away, was to remove the front bumper and clean out the radiators. I was shocked to see all the gross and dense dirt and leaves that built up over the years. Radiators look good now. Also, took the opportunity to clean out the wheel wells, which were equally disgusting. I am no Detailer, and I know these wells have a ways to go. When I took off the front wheels to get to the bumper and do some cleaning, I identified a couple of problem areas: first the big red calipers have peeled and faded, and second the captains side outer cv boot is leaking. Ugh, the ro do list gets longer
