Drove dads rebuilt ‘87
Just a rant…
Talk about disappointment. I know our turbos are in a different league, but wow was it ever a let down driving my dads freshly rebuilt ‘87 home from the shop today. (964 cams, JE pistons, full engine restoration…. Already had a Steve wong chip and fabspeed cat bypass). New Bilstein’s, turbo tie rods… other than harsh cosmetics it should be sorted.
I found it super sluggish, wobbly… sure raw and old school, but not in a way I remember liking. Felt like driving a Beetle lol.
He went for a spin before I gave my impressions and said it was “great, just like before but without so much smoke” lol… so I’m sure it’s just that I’ve gotten used to the TT but man!
I had the same car for 12 years (an ‘85 with similar mods) that I thought was pretty good, not bad, peppy enough. Welp, any reservations I may have had about trading her in for the turbo last year are completely gone now that I have the opportunity to drive them back to back. Way more fun to wring the turbo’s neck. =]

It is neat to drive them back to back and see the evolution of technology. At some point, it goes the other way too - I find the 996 a much more involved driving experience than the 991.2 - in the 991, you just point and shoot, electronics manage everything. The 996 is less analogue than the 930, but has enough tech on it to be a fantastic grin generator.
Good on your Dad.

I drove my friends 84 Carrera a couple of weeks ago and I still enjoy it. It definitely isn't in the same league as the 996tt but it is still a blast to drive and I love how solid they feel.

I can only handle driving cars pre-MY2000ish for about 20 minutes. That 20 minutes is enjoyable but beyond that time it becomes a bore and chore, I can't tolerate the NVH anymore. I have been selling off my "classic" cars over past couple of years. I'm feeling my 356C is next to go. The 996TT is the keeper.

I drove my 81-930 and 996 turbo back to back.
The 930 is way more of a grin generator. That said I've had it for almost 20 years so it's dialed in perfectly to what I want. The noises, smells, feel... everything is deliberate and entertaining even at slow speeds. Not traffic thought and definitely not on hot humid days.
The 996 is more livable more comfortable but lack the sensory overload which is the 930.
That said with the manual I love the wastegate noise at shift which is missing in my tiptronic.
The 996 is rapid for sure. But I remember back in my track days what the 930 lack in power it makes up for in lightness.
I've never dynoed the 930 but with 3.4 Mahle pistons and cylinders, 964 intercooler, 964 injectors, BB headers and hybrid turbo, my butt-dyno tells me is close to 400bhp.
Don't know what the new to me 996 turbo blackie is pushing I'm thinking it's PO flashed the ECU cuz it routinely shows .9 bar. I removed the front driveline so it's livelier than the tiptronic.
Rich world problems eh.

Can’t believe this is just occurring to me, but after reading your (relatively) fond memories, and searching my own for times that I was this disappointed with my ‘85 (never, well maybe that one time passing going up a hill in the fog)…
Anyway…it occurs to me that the Steve Wong chip has no idea about the new 964 cams/JEpistons. That would almost certainty be an issue no? Will send him an email… brb
edit: next morning, the rebuilder says the engine upgrades shouldn’t require chip reflashing. Wait until it’s broken in he said. =\

I drive mine back to back days all the time.
The TT is more comfy, but I enjoy my 86 more. The 86 has a ton of mods but still street able.
When I get in the TT I end up going into triple digits for speed. Just a matter of time before that gets me into trouble.

I had the chance to go from our 930 Turbo to the '21 992 Turbo a few days ago. Truly felt like time traveling, but in a way, the 930 just feels more alive. Definetly something to be said for the analog nature of the older P-cars.

Just picked up a '78SC and it does not disappoint. Totally different animal than any of my other cars. It just gives me this satisfaction while driving. Super solid feel, manual steering, gearbox that requires a little finesse (hopefully I'll improve the feel). Found myself going 80mph on the highway and thought I was going 60. Maybe my speedo is off. Gotta get some new treads on it before I take it up the canyons. That said, I think my 996T would be the one car I'd keep if I had to choose between them all.
