A few reasons, some already listed by others:
-It was one of my poster cars as a child.
-Not GT3 pricing and also value for the money.
-Incognito... I can go to Home Depot, the gas station, etc and people don't care/bother you.
-Not that I do however it is a vehicle that you can drive 365 days a year and enjoy it.
-I enjoy it on the highway as well as backroads. I've had cars that don't do both well. I will do consecutive 1000+ mile days with a smile on my face!

Why? Because it’s raw, angry, loud, it has three pedals, it turns and stops pretty well, and it’s relatively quick and fast. It’s simple enough to not be overwhelmed by nanny controls and complicated electronics to the point of making working on it seem like a daunting task or driving it seem like it’s on auto-pilot, yet it’s modern enough to reliably stay in tune and not be finicky or require constant adjustments or repairs. When I’m out in the twisties pushing it and there’s nobody that I can see in front of me or behind me, it feels like a cape instead of a car. I don’t know how else to explain it, but I used to get a similar feeling when I had sport bikes. It’s like you’re wearing it instead of operating it. And when I was a teenager, I’d see 911’s and think “Someday I’m going to have one. A red one. A turbo!” Plus, I just plain like looking at it. I’ve had the thing for years now, and I still absolutely love the view from all angles when I’m walking up to it. And don’t quote me on these numbers, but I think the total 996 turbos produced averaged around 4,000 per year for worldwide consumption. Those aren’t huge numbers. I think we’re all very fortunate to experience having these cars.

I considering it as well--make it a daily driver. A higher mile tip that was cared for would be ideal.

i could live with a tip also. as long as it had a retrofitted paddle shifter steering wheel. i enjoy my vw gti's paddle shifters and its 6 spd "mechatronic" DSG box.

those 996tt steering wheel button/levers(!?) remind me that the tip benz box is the evolution of a VW 411 "autostick" transmission. just... KIDDING! lol

the first 996tt i drove at my bmw dealer was a tip. i loved it and immediately searched for a MT coupe to purchase.

I regret buying the M5 without a manual. The PDK is by far a superior DCT to the BMW unit.

I'm thinking about selling the M5 to buy a manual M4.

the last bmw i had years ago was a new 335i with the paddle shifters. i thought it was superlative and perfectly suited to the car.

Yes, the torque converter most certainly will add to the smoothness - I find the DCT very clunky in auto mode, to the point where I only drive it in manual mode.

I love that it is a GT-1 derived Mezger supercar, and IMO the next Countach.

Why do I love my 996 Turbo ?

.
  1. It's a pleasure to work on.
  2. It is a joy to drive.
  3. It is pretty to look at.
  4. It is a reasonably priced supercar.
  5. It is a guilt-free non-depreciating asset.
  6. It has superb engineering.
  7. It responds to mild tweaks and tunes wonderfully.
  8. It is mine all mine.
  9. It begs to be driven hard
  10. It doesn't complain when put away wet.
