Although I worked on my various cars in the past, I've always enjoyed the "operating of machines" more than the "working on the machines." As the years passed, the "operating" side has almost completely taken over.
There are a lot of talented maintainers on this forum. This thread (kghaas) is just one example of that talent.

After spending the last couple of days doing brakes, I realized that I usually farm the work out, but I like to work on them as well.

I really like the look of the Torque display. Have you determined if one can have full Torque functionality along with Android Auto functions such as calling/texting/Waze/music/etc? Hoping so. My new Kenwood system and new-to-me 996TT arrive next week. The display is my only planned variance from stock.
PS: what functions are on your Torque display?

On the torque display there is a limited number of available sensors. A lot of the sensors in the 996 are not available to the generic OBD2 protocol, hence the need for Durametric and other proprietor diagnostics.
Most important to me is temp readings and boost with history so I can see what I actually achieved without looking at the dash at full throttle.
The data you can read, you can find here:

Changed the thermostat. What a total pain! The last bolt took about an hour to get. Anyway; the thermostat in the car was wrong and didn't close properly. This is probably why the car ran too cold. I will also check the changeover valve on the trans.
When doing the gearbox mounts I also swapped the flexi disc. Way overdue. Lots of cracking and bits falling off. Strange that this wasn't changed earlier by porsche dealer since the car has full service history from one porsche dealer from new.

Thanks for sharing all of these details. It is fun to see someone just dive into one of the cheaper cars and have fun without being too serious. You are reducing some of my fears as I shop for my first P-Car.

First drive and I got both ABS and PSM lights. The car was also stuck in 2nd gear and refused to move.
I found a used iCarsoft i960 OBD reader which was supposed to read Porsche codes for $50 40 minutes away, so wnet off and picked it up.
After updating the software II hooked it up and got some codes:
DME: No fault codes
ABS: Fault, 4215 PASM control unit
Tiptronic:
14: Speed comparison between n2 and n3 implausible
51: Transmission slips or gear implausible
39: CAN: DME communication disturbed
31: CAN: Lateral acceleration from PSM implausible
25: CAN: Front left wheel rpm from PSM implausible
23: CAN: Rear left wheel rpm from PSM implausible
I will make a x-post for problem solving help and a video of the i960
Ready for first drive
Codes..
OBD reader. Supposed to read Porsche codes

I would love to tinker with the car ,but without a lift it is just too hard for this beat up, joint replaced body to do so. I swapped my exhaust tips out a month ago while on the floor and i was a cripple for 3 days afterward. I miss the old days when water pumps, oil changes, tune ups and brake jobs were fun to do. I had a set of those red ramps and I would drive my 280Z up on them and do all my maintenance.
