Just out of idle curiosity, how much time was involved in the above modification, roughly?
Lots of hours pondering exactly what needed to be done, not so many actually doing it!
Aside from the time needed to remove/replace the rear bumper and intercoolers (as you would need to do for a spark plug change), and doing it again, I could probably modify the ducts, mate up the new intercoolers, and have them ready to be re-installed back in the car in less than an hour a side.
I also made a few changes from the above... After modifying all the clips, i abandoned that method. It is time consuming and finicky... medium-duty zip ties work perfectly. Remember that the clips and zip ties only hold things together until they are back in the racks and back in the car. Once fully installed, everything is sandwiched together with the bumper cover and isn't going anywhere.
I also abandoned the flat sheet metal extension plate... IMHO it works better if you just trim the ducts to fit without the plate and just use some strategically placed weatherstrip. Since i had my new intercooler assemblies apart and together several times trying to figure out why the hell they didn't fit, I streamlined a few things for the better.
It is that and the fabrication of components I am curious about - I will then calculate an hourly rate to define what the real costs of the job were.
I am wondering if it comes close to to the value of buying a set of those Marstens (apologies if I spelt that wrong), because if it does, then it makes it easier to justify the purchase.

My car is a 2001 and I also could not use either of the front/lower mounting points. I also agree that zip ties are the way to sandwich the upper and lower ducts together. Modifying the straps is a lot of unnecessary effort. With zip ties and only the 2 rear mounting points, it's extremely stable and those intercoolers aren't going anywhere.
I know we talked a bunch about modifying the clips vs zip ties. Either are fine but I'm glad I have the modified clips on mine. This is not a quick job, between taking everything apart, modifying the shrouds, clips, etc, putting the intercooler assemblies back together and then putting the car back together I bet I had 10 or more hours into it.
Of course now that I've done it once and have all the pics, measurements etc to modify the shrouds I could probably cut that time in half. Assuming I didn't have to make mods to the brackets like Paul did...

Get a set of 4.5" bell cores and you have excellent intercoolers for a little more money.

I am in the process of doing this mod now and in putting the first (passenger) side back in, I could not get the bracket mounted back onto the car. That’s when I realized, I had the early style bracket. When I pulled the IC out of the one mounting location, I could get it all to line up.
My question, what did you use and how to fabricate the extension?
