I commute long distances and i like the quiet and so does my wife. i have switch back and forth 4 times and just put the stocker on for smog check and decided to leave it on. I do miss the Kline sound especially on throttle blips down shifting and the gurgle/pop as it slows down. I may "adjust" my stock system to have HJS 200 cell cats and a full vacuum actuated bypass but still look stock from under the car. Time will tell.

Exhaust sounds are definitely a personal choice, for me I always thought the Kline was pretty quiet almost stock sounding. That is until the little pedal in the footwell is depressed to the floor, then she howls..

Yep, I love my Kline too, it was a beast with de-cats, but I'm now running 200 cell HJS cats that have toned it down.

But to Third Reef's point, the stock exhaust is exponentially more quiet....whisper quiet.

A couple nice sized drill holes fixes everything.

I keep thinking about doing this... How do you get all the metal shreds out?

Don't drill your stock exhaust out yet, there is no going back. i have an idea of how to do a similar mod that is adjustable and can be "turned down" if you think you have made it too loud with the mod. I will try to do it this week end and make a little write up.

I've driven turbos with this mod... It definitely improves idle sound and lower rpms's, but really does little or nothing for full-throttle high-rpm which is when the stock exhaust sounds especially lame.

No real downside IMHO other than the hit you would take in 20 years if virgin 996 Turbos become as collectable as 959's... Better than stock, essentially zero cost if you already have decent tools.

That thread linked above is a bit confusing, not until around post 45 does it actually show the mod in any detail. Essentially, you are doing a bit of a "fister mod" but internal to the exhaust instead of with external piping by making a small bypass for the exhaust cans by drilling a hole...

I sure wish there was a happy medium between the ultra-quiet OEM exhaust and the expanse of expensive, often droney, and often a bit too loud aftermarket exhausts out there.

Would love to see what you come up with...

Has anyone just cut off the muffler and welded pipes straight through?
