Default Lift Question

HI All,

I'm building a new 3 car garage. Because of a few design choices I needed to make, the garage ceiling height is only about 9'6. Will I have enough space to put a lift in and park say 2 996s?

Thanks!

I’m in the middle of a similar expiration.

From what I’ve been told the rule of thumb is height of car one plus height of car to +10 inches.

I think the 996 is 51’. So that’s. 112 inches. So you will have about 2 inches to spare.

I recommend flush overhead lighting.

I’ve got 2 four posters in my 3 car garage. The ceiling height is no more than yours. I have an E30 cabriolet parked over my 996tt, then a 951 parked over my 928S4. The runners that the top car sits on are only about 6” thick.

Putting in two 4-posters today. 11’ ceiling. Hoping to put my wife’s CRV under one of the Porsche’s.

Unfortunately I don’t think so. It’s not just the height of the bottom car, it’s the location of the mechanical stops on the lift. The next available stop could well be 5” over the bottom car. A wall mounted door opener gives you more space but 114” is not very much.

Is is it too late to increase the height to 11? That’s more than required but you’ll have more options on what you can park underneath.

This setup has 128” if I recall correctly. It’s been a while since I did the install.

Unfortunately, at this point, I can't raise the height at all.

When I built my 1800 sq. ft. shop I made sure the ceiling height was 14’ to accommodate just about any car I wanted to lift. Also keep in mind the garage door opener requirements. I also have about a 4’ attic above the ceiling where the 220V power is located for the lift, as well as storage capabilities. The ceiling has plenty of room for the ceiling mounted Bose speakers for the shop.

i guess my point is since you are building a new shop/garage, build it as high as feasibility possible. The cost benefit of doing will be realized, especially in the future.

I can't go any higher. It's a city code based on the location of my garage.

Is the code the height of the ceiling or the door? Because I did one with 12' ceilings
and standard 9' doors and the city here didn't care.

But,,,, we did also put the headers at 12' and tagged in a false section to get down to the 9',
then a few months after the place was complete and signed off,, the doors suddenly became 11'6 tall.
The rollup doors were installed as if the openings were already big, so the change was 45 minutes on
A Saturday afternoon I parked a U-haul in front and nobody noticed except my car guy neighbor who
was not going to rat me out,, his garage was way off the reservation, he had 3Phase power.. and a
machine shop in half of his.. (I miss that neighbor a lot... )

What brand lift do you have and do you know the model?

If I was doing 2, one would be a 4 post and 1 would be a 2 post..
2 post for suspension or engine pull and the like, 4 post for the side I want
to use for storage more often.
