Body color definitely available in '04 anyway. Mine has it, factory original. It actually took two option codes to get it done.......delete rear emblem + rear emblem in body color (or similar verbiage).

Here is a link to the option build codes:
https://www.stuttcars.com/technical/...des/996-98-01/

I went through all my options and none were for a black badge. Given that the badge is peeling, I am assuming that it was originally chrome.

Thanks all for your help.

I think that is a very safe assumption.

It most certainly is chrome underneath...and it looks pretty good (for being chrome) probably protected for who knows how long by the black coating.

Are you going to attempt to remove all the black and do a final evaluation about the quality of the resulting finish, or are you just going to remove and replace with a new silver badge?

Well that does look pretty good, that Plasti dip should peel off pretty easily.

Yes, you are right. It was some sort of rubbery coating and it peeled off pretty easily. Not concours ready yet, but the chrome badge is in good shape. A bit more clean up and it should be good to go! 1) Factory original 2) don't have to worry about tracking down a new black badge. Thanks for all the help!
