Why would anyone in their right mind spend $100.00+/hr to remove a 20 yr old alternator @ roughly 4 hrs labor just to replace the voltage regulator? Only to realize they need to spend the same money AGAIN to go back in and replace a possible faulty alternator a few days after?
Thats a pure definition of stupidity.

agree. i have never once understood the wisdom of replacing a vr ( hoping ) when a new alt is 600 bucks and and an hour to r&r. i like saving as much as anyone. i just don't want to do stuff twice.

i would suggest that *most* shops would simply replace the alternator and be "done" rather than r&r test the vr and *advise*. a porsche dealer ( for example ) isn't going to bench test the vr. they are going to r&r the alt. why? certainly, for the added *revenue* in combination with what i am suggesting here. both, in equal measure.
again, i say with further clarification, that if one doesn't DIY? spend the 350 and have it r&r'd *once* and forget about it.

the alluded to "wisdom" of only replacing the VR in the *hope* that will cure irregular alternator issues, presupposes that anyone can simply r&r the alternator, and replace the 40$ part themselves. when in fact, as is often the case, it is NOT simply the VR gone bad. this would obviously necessitate someone that isn't doing the work themselves, to do it all over again.

I completely agree. If you have a rapport with a shop then that applies for sure.
*most* shops as you know just want the money and don't want mess with the VR when an alt is as you say 350
Bottom line is though if one can simply r&r the reg themselves then that's of course the way to go.
If not? "My" way makes "more" sense to me. It's just not worth taking a chance on doubling up on labor if it turns out NOT to be a 40 dollar part.
Was iirc? the only point I was trying to make.
