I did mine without a spring compressor. You need to wind the spring down over the lower perch, put the nut on top and then twist/wrestle the spring back onto the perch

I tried that but couldn't seem to get it far enough down with the H&R springs like i could on the O.E shock. maybe i was just tired, zip ties saved the day.

Can you guys point me to a "how to" on the net for installing new shocks on the front of the 996TT? I have seen the instructions for the 2wd 996, but I'm guessing that we have to disconnect the driveshaft out of the front end to get the suspension to drop low enough to get the shock out?

Thanks for any pointers,
M

No need to disconnect the drive shaft. Install is the same as 996.

Do you compress the spring while installed on the car? How do you get the suspension to drop low enough?

One note: this only works with lowering springs getting them back on - if you are replacing on a stock system you might need spring compressors to get it low enough to clear.

I would say B8s are very similar to X73 ride and handling. Sporty; firmer and lower than stock. Less body roll.

I don't scrape at all - should be o.k. w M030 springs too. (I scraped all the time in RS)

I would get X73 top mounts if you can.
What's the difference in the X73 top hats? Thanks!

I assumed he was talking about top hats for the struts.

Top mounts are like a rubber disc that sit on top of the strut. There should be X73 specific part no. I believe they are firmer than stock.

Here's a picture of the torn up top mount from my 997 turbo, when I installed new B8s.

the x73 kit are bilstein B8 shocks/struts with H&R springs.. so there you go.

here's the part numbers for the x73 top mounts

996-343-980-15
996-343-980-16

I ended up using 997 Turbo top mounts, the cost of them is about half with no clearance issues.

997 343 015 02
997 343 016 02

I asked Gert at Carnewl about X73 shocks and he said they were between B6 and B8.
