A big THANK YOU to our SOUL guys for their kind words on our system for the 996TT
We put a lot of time and effort into this system and are thrilled to see it has been quickly accepted in the community as one of the go-to systems for this platform. For those interested, here is a link to our product page and you can take a listen to a video of the system below.
In regards to emissions, I want to make it clear that it is our understanding there is no aftermarket exhaust system replacing the factory cats that passes the "CARB visual inspection" in California. That said, I can't say that has stopped anyone from purchasing our system for the 996TT and I can say with confidence that our HJS 200cell cats will pass the SMOG sniff test. Once the rear bumper is off, the factory exhaust system can be removed relatively quickly in one piece, and so can our system after the first installation. Therefore, if you "don't know a guy" and they decide to look closely for the visual inspection, a quick swap back and forth every two years is a small price to pay to maximize the driving experience of your car.
I also want to give a shout out to Sam at ByDesign. I have worked with him for many years, he has tuned numerous builds of mine, and he is an absolute A Player in the industry. I can not recommend his expertise enough, and I look forward to partnering with him on many future projects.

That's the same exhaust I'm running, but I'm worried that the cats are getting old. Debating whether to swap back to stock before attempting smog (and I have to go to a STAR station).

Not sure, but STAR might be a requirement for older cars. My POS '96 Camry requires STAR smogging, no high performance issues with that car I assure you.

33krazy!, that's what they're looking for. A car with a tune on it that's pushing the monitors to read ready will have them pop "ready" instantly after resetting them.
That's how the emissions place knows something isn't stock because as you say, they won't read "ready" right away

They are checking the monitors to see if they're set. Then they're resetting them and checking them again. If they're reading "ready" directly after resetting them, then they know you have a tune that's messing with the emissions monitors and they fail you.
I've been told this is happening in Massachusetts. It's easy for them to do and I'm sure others will do it in the future as well.
John, I haven't had an issue here in Colorado either, they just read the car and check the gas cap. Since I have cats and a tune that doesn't play with the emissions monitors I pass without problems

Yep, they started doing it in 2012/13 here in Mass. Resets to see if they come back ready. If it fails then you get a black flag on the vin that the only way to get it removed is wait until the car is 15 years old and then re-register the car, it will fail the first time as the flag is on the vin. Then you are given a number to call to arrange an appointment to have MAC center inspect the car. If the car is over 15 years old they can normally do it over the phone. If under 15 years old you need to revert back to stock programming/install anything that was removed and take it in for an inspection. Once the MAC verifies that the emissions stuff is not modified, then they remove the black flag.
Went through this with my Audi TT track car, royal PITA that took a couple months to sort out even with it being over 15 years old from a black flag issued prior.

I had my stock exhaust reinstalled yesterday and I then reflashed to stock tune via the Accessport. This morning I drove 40 miles to East Bay at under 3000 rpm, then plugged in my cheap code reader, and to my surprise it showed everything ready. 2.5 hours later I then drove 40 miles back to SF at under 3000rpm, went straight to the local smog guy where I take my LS 460, he plugged in, everything looked good. Passed. Got my cert, and my 2019 sticker should be enroute.
Kline exhaust going back on next week with brand new 200 cell HJS Sport Cats. I'll worry about smog again in 23 months.
