Default Worst rattle ever? — VIDEO

Hi all,

I have the worst squeaky/rattle/jiggly sound ever. I've been trying to track it down for 2 years and am at a total loss. It's an 01 Turbo, so no glovebox. The squeak sounds like it's coming from behind the passenger side of the dash. I've had the dash off, but the noise was there before and after. I did the windshield rope. And the ice wax. And the lose screw in the door. And the felt on the seatbelt side. And new topmounts. And... so many other things.

What the heck is causing this noise?? It sounds like an airport shuttle/bus (luckily, the squeak is being very loud and persistent in the video).

Thank you!!

Sounds like crickets. Does it make that noise coasting with the engine off?

Crickets is a good description of the noise. Like a bunch of crickets getting tickled by road vibrations. I’d almost be happier to convince myself that’s what it is instead of driving myself crazy to fix it.

Another piece of evidence to consider: I’ve had a passenger open the door while driving and the sound isn’t affected. So, as an aside, it doesn’t seem to be door-related either.

Does the sound change when the HVAC fan is on?

No. On, off, hot, cold, wet, dry... no difference. But the vibration sounds kind of heavy. I took the blower motor out from beneath the dash to see if I could hear the sound by shaking it around, to no avail. But it's the right location, weight and materials to be making the chirping sound. Is there any reason I couldn't remove it and drive around the block just to see?

The HVAC system is what I would concentrate on. I think there would be no problem with pulling the fan and driving around.

Ok, thanks. I'll try that and report back.

Seems you need to check your suspension bushings!

I removed the fan, but no difference

Its the most annoying sound in the world. It doesn’t sound like suspension — also have new mounts and struts etc about 1k ago. And that didn’t impact the noise at all. But what should I check re bushings?

Any other ideas? Thanks for all the help so far!

Check the suspension again, including the sway bar links and mounts. Make sure everything is tight and nothing is rubbing. I would then look at the windshield wiper mechanism, the AC lines running through the bulkhead and the passenger side air bag.

Any chance we could get a longer video over different road conditions / engine RPM? That is a high pitch noise which reminds me of really thin metal vibrating on metal (Carlo's idea of the AC lines rubbing on the sheet metal bulkhead) or thin plastic rubbing on plastic. I would check the interior trim as well as the above suggestion. I would press on parts of the dash, center console, roof liner, etc as you drive to see if the noise changes pitch or stops. There is a similar noise in my wife's Tahoe and when I press on the center console, it stops. The center console is rubbing on the dash where they meet. The two are not directly secured to each other.

I can do a longer video soon, sure. But I just thought of something. There are two hard hoses that run under the passenger and up the wheel well. From beneath, they both feel secure, but I can swear that the thinner line is a touch wobbly. Maybe it's vibrating and hitting the sheetmetal in the wheel well? I would so love to believe that's what it is, but am also scared that I'm going into a literal rabbit hole with this.

Wrap a paper towel around the line you think is loose and see if the squeaking stops.

Towel wrap made no difference, so it’s probably not what I thought. I’m gonna take a look at the airbag later. Thanks again.
