Not that it matters (b cause mine is so old), but I am running an old school AWE dual muffler system. Bought it used. Slight drone, but nothing bad at all. It is louder than stock from the outside, but I can still cruise and talk on the cell no problem. It has cats too, and at its age I a sure they are 200 cell...or worse.

SpeedTech has caught my eye for a while now. I just wonder if the 2.5" or the 3" system would be similar in volume inside to my current. Hard to tell I know. My car is mostly stock right now, and AT MOST, would get some upgraded K16's and a tune. It's a street car through and through. I was considering removing the cars from my current system, I just know from experience on other cars that alone can cause a lot of drone, depending on the rest of the system. So this thread has been an interesting one for me to pour through.

Definitely a good thread. I bought the 2.5" Kline the same week I bought my car back in December 2014. With 200 cell cats it is very quiet, no drone on the inside. Has a nice sound at WOT. with the de-cat pipes in place, the interior sound is a bit louder, but not objectionable and not annoying or nearly as loud as my 2/3rds worn Yokohamas. Exhaust note at WOT roars though...

I am not planning any major mods, maybe K16 billets one day, so the 2.5" exhaust is the perfect size. All the 3" exhausts I've heard are LOUD. Very loud actually.

Just my $0.02

So i finally installed my speedtech 2.5 “quiete” with 100 cell cat system on my 02 Tiptronic. Overall impression of the exhaust, quality is good. Sound is good.

The sound of the exhaust from the inside is a deep tone. I havent heard it from the outside. Its still a little too loud for me but its manageable. 2-3k rpm at accelaration its a little loud without music on. Once you hit 50ish mph in 4-5 gear, its not too loud. Cruising on the freeway at 80 with music on, its tolerable, not as loud. If you have no music on, it tends to be loud depending on how fast you are going.

The loudness of the exhaust to me is still a little too loud depending on my mood. I daily drive my car so sometimes i just want it back to stock sound but it is what it is. I do enjoy the sound at WOT.

I dont know how lound other exhaust are since i have nothinng to compare speedtech to. But if you want something nice and is not super loud, id recommend speedtech.

End od the day, my wife was able to tolerate the sound so its not as loud as some other exhaust ive had on other cars ive owned in the past. Had my wife said its too loud, then i wouldve had had to put the stock back on...lol

I found on my Speedtech 2.5 that inside volume is very specific to the rpm, that being that certain rpm are much quieter than others even though only 500rpm difference. You poor folks in California need to get together and rent an address in Oklahoma. We not only don't have smog testing, we don't have any vehicle inspections at all, ever. The troopers were abusing inspections on rural folks so the state dropped inspections altogether. You can do pretty much whatever you want as long as you don't get noise complaints and have DOT tires.

Theres 40 million people in the state of California. 4 million in Los Angeles alone.

Oklahoma as a State is about 4 million total.

Smog is a real problem over here hence the very strick smog laws.

It's not all about population. The geography (mountains) and weather (the Pacific inversion) of the Los Angeles area are major contributors to smog. If the Pacific inversion drops to around 3,000 feet or less (which it does for the majority of every year), it becomes a lid over the Los Angeles Basin and inhibits the vertical escape of polluted air.

On the other hand, the entire state of Oklahoma has on average windy conditions (in fact it's very windy many days) with few geographic barriers preventing the mass flow of air, which allows pollutants to be disbursed.

I dont doubt anything you pointed out...But im not a smart dude so Im just going to roll with population and 35 million vehicles in california. Its the easy way out...hahah

Not all of California has smog issues, so it's not really a function of the 35 million vehicles as not all of those vehicles are in the greater Los Angeles area.

But if you had in Oklahoma the same number of vehicles that are in the greater Los Angeles area, in the same size geographic area as greater Los Angeles, the Oklahoma area would not have the same smog issues that Los Angeles has.

Funny, in Vancouver we used to have 'Air Care', a mandatory once a year roll on a dyno and check your exhaust...

We also have (still) Provincially controlled insurance.

So, the way to avoid Air Care was to insure your car for inter Provincial travel, and voila, no more fear of having your car pulled off the street because someone pulled their cats...

And they say we are one of the greenest cities in the world.

I have an exhaust on the way, using 200 cell HJS Cats. I chose to have cats on purpose, if you're using good ones, no real power loss is there. Plus now I don't have to worry about emissions testing or looking at a CEL...

What exhaust set-up did you choose?

Be cautious tracking it heavily with 200 CPI HJS cats Josh. I’ve seen a number of them disintegrate from overheating on several cars at HPR, the last being a Caymen with an FVD exhaust that uses those cats. The 200 CPI HJS HD Tuner core is intended for street use and simply can not dissipate heat effectively under hard track use due to its density. They usually hold up for 1 or 2 seasons before failing. HJS Emitec 100 CPI Motorsport cores are nearly bullet proof and more appropriate for track use. Ideally you want a 100 CPI core with a 120-130 mm diameter at a minimum to ensure good flow and heat dissipation. The larger the core, the more it will flow and the more platinum it will contain to ensure emission compliance. A large 100 will scrub better than a smaller 200 and flow substantially more. Bigger is always better. I have done a lot of testing in this area with good data.
